As announced on Monday Night Raw, Dean Ambrose squared off with the current United States champion, Rusev.

Results

  • Santino Marella was revealed as the guest general manager for this week's show.
  • Ziggler defeated intercontinental champion Harper by disqualification following a low blow. After the match, Harper retrieved a ladder, but Ziggler cut off an attempted slam onto the weapon and delivered a facebuster. Marella appeared and announced a Ladder match between the two for TLC.
  • A retrospective video package on The Authority aired.
  • Seth Rollins, Kane, Jamie Noble, Joey Mercury and Big Show came to the ring. They discussed their plans for their TLC opponents before Marella again appeared, this time announcing Ryback and Erick Rowan vs. Rollins and Big Show for the main event.
  • Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods (with Big E) defeated Cesaro and Tyson Kidd (with Natalya). After the match, Gold and Stardust appeared on the video screen and talked down about the message the New Day spreads.
  • Naomi received flowers from The Miz. Jimmy Uso responded by throwing the vase.
  • Ambrose cut a promo on Wyatt. Before his match with Rusev could start, the U.S. champion and Lana appeared at the top of the ramp. They cut a promo on Jack Swagger and what they called "American intimidation" before refusing to compete. Ambrose chased after them but was attacked by Wyatt, who smashed his head with a chair, using the ring stairs as a prop. Ambrose was taken out of the arena on stretcher.
  • The Miz defeated Jey Uso with the Skull-Crushing Finale.
  • Naomi defeated Brie Bella. During the match, Nikki Bella tried to interfere, but AJ Lee pulled her off the apron.
  • Ryback and Rowan defeated Rollins and Big Show when Ryback pinned Rollins.

Analysis

One of the biggest advantages SmackDown has going for it is the seeming lack of attention paid to the show by Vince McMahon. While it may not have as many newsworthy occurrences as a typical episode of Raw, the Friday night show is oftentimes significantly more focused than its celebrated counterpart.

That again appears to be the case Friday night. Every match and segment that unfolds is a meaningful entry into the feud involved.

The issues between the former members of Team Cena and Team Authority continue leading into TLC, which is a show shaping up to be wildly entertaining. The addition of Ziggler vs. Harper in a Ladder match gives the show a potential show-stealing bout.

Gold and Stardust appear to have found a suitable rival in the New Day, who score a big win over Cesaro and Kidd before enduring a promo from the company's bizarre brothers.

Marella as guest general manager certainly makes sense given the release of WWE Films' Jingle All the Way 2, but it is somewhat lackluster considering the fact that WWE brought Daniel Bryan back last week and dusted off the Anonymous GM gimmick for Raw.

Still, Marella is fun when allowed to be more natural with his comedy, and there is hope that the show will be a good time for all involved.

It should be interesting to see how Ryback and Rowan perform in the main event, especially since both typically are at their best with someone better than them in the ring to carry the action. But if they wish to achieve success at the next level, they will have to prove that they can rise to the occasion regardless of the quality of their opposition.
