Monday Night Football Week 13: TV Schedule, Live Stream for Dolphins vs. Jets

Andrew GouldDec 1, 2014

Often underrated due to an unassuming 6-5 record, the Miami Dolphins can make a major statement by decimating the New York Jets on Monday Night Football.

After hanging tough with the Denver Broncos during a three-point loss, the Dolphins entered Week 13 ranked No. 5 in Football Outsiders' overall DVOA, a measure of team efficiency. Just seven teams sported a higher point differential (+66) following Sunday's slate.

Out of action, the Dolphins still had a good Sunday, watching four AFC competitors with 7-4 records fall. If they take care of business on Monday night, they'll draw even with a slew of squads vying for a playoff bid.

They certainly have an opponent ripe for exploitation. The Jets (2-9) remain in turmoil after suffering a 38-3 defeat to the Buffalo Bills, one that coerced Rex Ryan to make another quarterback change with his job in peril.

There's a clear favorite here, but Miami must watch its step to circumvent Monday night's trap game in the Meadowlands.

Nothing says huge Monday night showdown quite like a Geno Smith sighting.

The second-year quarterback, who lost his job after throwing three interceptions to Buffalo in October, received the call to action a month later versus the familiar AFC East foe. Michael Vick played his way out of a job by going 7-of-19 with 76 yards and a pick.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Ryan will likely let Smith save his job this season.

In relief, Smith played crisper than usual, completing 10 of his 12 passes for 89 yards in garbage time. Ryan offered the highest praise he possibly could to ESPNNewYork.com's Jane McManus.

At this point, the Jets would love nothing more than "pretty decent" quarterback play. They rank last with 173.7 passing yards per game and a 55.6 completion percentage. Now is probably not the best time to mention Miami's prowess against the aerial attack.

The Dolphins yield a minuscule 6.2 yards per attempt, which only trailed the Denver Broncos entering the weekend. Not only do they possess one of the game's most stifling defenses, but the offense showed it can compete with the big boys. Against a tough Denver unit, Miami scored 36 points.

Ever since an ugly start to 2014, Ryan Tannehill has broken out in grand fashion. In his past eight games, he is hoisting a stellar 70.6 completion percentage, exceeding 70 percent in each of the last four contests. ESPN's Field Yates shows how that stellar accuracy puts him in high regard.

Casual fans unfamiliar with the 26-year-old should see him excel against a shaky New York secondary. While the group allows 238.6 passing yards per game, putting it around the middle of the pack, the 7.7 opposing yards per attempt and 65.1 completion percentage depict a below-average grouping.

Throw in an NFL-worst three interceptions, and the Jets present a favorable matchup for Tannehill and Co. Lamar Miller will face tougher sledding against an upper-echelon front seven, so a heavy passing game is the right way to pick apart Gang Green.

There's no such thing as a certainty in the NFL, and bizarre things tend to happen in prime-time showings. The previously winless Oakland Raiders knocked off the Chiefs on a Thursday night offering, and the rolling Dallas Cowboys fell for a similar trap game against Washington last month.

Three weeks ago, the Jets established their blueprint for an upset when they halted Ben Roethlisberger's touchdown barrage. Shut down the run completely, pressure the quarterback, create turnovers and pound the ball on the ground with limited, but efficient passing.

That's a lot that needs to go right. Turnovers are impossible to predict, but the odds are against the Jets significantly winning that battle over a superior offense and defense. The Dolphins haven't lost to anybody with a sub-.500 record this season, so don't expect a shocker on Monday night.
