WWE Programming's Best Match for Week of November 29

Brad JonesNov 29, 2014

After a shaky start, the final week of WWE's promotional tactic of offering a free month to new WWE Network subscribers has produced some excellent in-ring content that will undoubtedly attract many to the service.

There were good matches on television, too, but the real standouts this week came on the Network.

The main event of this week's edition of NXT was a superb match between Tyson Kidd and Finn Balor. It seems that Balor is having no trouble adjusting to the WWE style—expect great things from this one.

Luke Harper and Dolph Ziggler put on another good match on SmackDown, but an indecisive finish left things open for a TLC showdown. This is a compelling pairing in the offing, and you would hope that it's one that's going to be capitalized on at the upcoming pay-per-view.

Speaking of pay-per-views, the best action this week came from Survivor Series, continuing WWE's streak of delivering at the "Big Four" across 2014. The four-on-four Divas match was something of a surprise, and Dean Ambrose vs. Bray Wyatt lived up to expectations.

However, perhaps the best match on the undercard was the Fatal 4-Way for the WWE Tag Team Championship, where Damien Mizdow took centre stage. This bout was a rare occurrence of WWE striking while the iron was hot, and it played out perfectly.

Match of the Week for November 29: Team Cena vs. Team Authority in a Traditional Survivor Series Match at Survivor Series 2014

The traditional Survivor Series match has dropped out of focus somewhat in recent years, but it had a stunning return to form last weekend.

The 10 men involved in the match—half of them making their WWE debuts in their current form in 2012 or later—all gave their all, and we got a match worthy of being a part of the long history of the pay-per-view. This will surely go down among the very best that Survivor Series has to offer. It was that good.

Perhaps unexpectedly, Ziggler was the star of the show, with him and Seth Rollins forming the backbone of their respective teams. However, just about everyone got his moment in the spotlight—and, crucially, came out of the match looking better than he went in.

The format of this match can sometimes lead to eliminations that don't quite make sense or moments of warped logic to protect certain Superstars. Thankfully, there was none of that here. Everything made sense and contributed to a compelling back-and-forth narrative.

Special praise has to go to Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, who did great work in their supporting roles. There was plenty of talk about the stakes of this match in the weeks ahead of the pay-per-view. But these two did the heavy lifting on the night in terms of making the consequences seem very real.

The WWE debut of Sting was a huge moment that will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come. But hopefully, that doesn't come at the cost of forgetting the great match that set the scene. In truth, the bout could have done without the Icon. But his presence made for the icing on an already impressive cake.

All in all, this was one of the best main events of the year—and a true showcase of some of the best young talent on the WWE roster.

Did another match stand out for you this week? Perhaps the Divas title match from Survivor Series? Or Adam Rose vs. Fandango? Perhaps even that U.S. title Battle Royal? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
