WWE Survivor Series 2014: Biggest Talking Points Following Major Event

Sharon GlencrossNov 24, 2014

While it may have been a patchy pay-per-view—the matches weren't great, and it came off as a glorified edition of Raw at points—Survivor Series nonetheless left fans with numerous talking points and a great deal of things to discuss.

In the midcard, Nikki Bella won the Divas Championship from AJ Lee. It will be rather interesting to see in the upcoming weeks how the Total Divas star copes with having to carry the division. She's a great personality, for sure, but her wrestling skills have always left something to be desired.

Lee's future is also up in the air. A recent report from F4Wonline (via Wrestle Zone) surfaced a few weeks ago that she may be leaving the company after the pay-per-view. Notably, her loss here was laughably quick (the bout was just 34 seconds long!) and seemed rather definite. But we'll just have to wait and see.

The Miz and Damien Mizdow are the new tag team champions, which is good news considering how stagnant the division has been recently. Here's hoping the two can work hard, get even more over with the fans and help make the tag titles relevant once more.

Their inevitable split and feud down the road should be interesting to watch, too. The Miz just doesn't seem to like his sidekick getting his fair share of the spotlight.

Dolph Ziggler's career prospects also improved hugely in St. Louis. The star was the sole survivor in the main event and won the bout for John Cena's team. Granted, he had a bit of help from Sting at the end, but still, it was a deeply impressive performance.

Credit to him. He worked incredibly hard throughout and helped make it a gripping and truly memorable main event.

Unsurprisingly, fans on Twitter were lining up to lavish praise on the star following the show:

Ideally, this will lead to a renewed push for the wrestler, whose talents have been woefully squandered by the bookers over the past 18 months. He certainly earned it with his sterling work on the show.

In other news from the main event: The Big Show turned heel when he attacked Cena, shook hands with Triple H and then walked out, never to be seen again.

Whether Big Show can truly bring anything to his new role remains to be seen, but at least it’s a moderately interesting change of character.

Of course, the major talking point coming out of the show is the debut of Sting. As mentioned, the WCW legend ran in at the end and helped Team Cena win by throwing Ziggler over an unconscious Seth Rollins.

He also had a tremendous and extremely tense showdown with Triple H, which may very well be a sign that the two men are due to face off at WrestleMania 31 next year. If booked correctly, that could be a dream match that garners much interest and does huge business.

It is, of course, way too early to decide if Sting’s run in WWE will be a success, but judging by Sunday night, it’s off to a phenomenal start. Ideally, the company will choose to use him in a limited role—at least until the Royal Rumble. You don’t want to risk the fans growing tired of him before he finally faces off with Triple H in a match.

The seeds for WrestleMania 31 were planted at Survivor Series—in that respect, it succeeded as a pay-per-view, even if the in-ring action was decidedly weak.
