Breaking Down the Fight
The battle between Pacquiao and Algieri was an interesting matchup coming into Saturday.
Pac-Man had the edge in experience, power and speed, but Algieri proved his toughness in his previous fight against Ruslan Provodnikov. The result was plenty of hype around the battle, but Algieri simply didn't live up to expectations.
From the very start of the fight, it was Pacquiao who depicted the pace of the bout. Using his speed and maneuverability, Pac-Man began breaking through Algieri's defensive game plan almost immediately.
Algieri spoke to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com about what his mindset was for this fight and how he planned on earning the win:
"I knew he would come on strong. I had a feeling he would try to blast me out of there just because I'm not used to the big stage. Manny is the best in the world at fighting like Manny Pacquiao. That's really what it is. His style, he has so much experience. He's perfected fighting like Manny Pacquiao.
The plan was to get to the later rounds without taking too much damage, step up the pace and land shots that would hurt him. If the knockout came, it came. We weren't specifically looking for the knockout, but we were looking to put some damage on the guy.
"
The assault began in the very first round when Pacquiao's quickness looked to catch Algieri off guard, resulting in the champion landing several hard shots. The lopsided battle continued into the second round, and Pac-Man was credited with his first knockdown of the night.
Pacquiao came out fast in the middle rounds and began landing punches at will. Algieri tried to use his jab to keep his challenger at a distance, but Pac-Man managed to get inside and started amassing visual damage on his opponent from the onset of the fight.
For the skeptics who questioned whether Pacquiao still possessed the power that helped make him famous, he knocked down Algieri twice in the sixth round with heavy shots as well as two more times in the ninth round. Add in another knockdown in the 10th round, and it was clear the Pac-Man of old was back.
Algieri deserves immense credit for staying in the fight and going the distance, but this was a lopsided result that reflected the skill Pacquiao clearly still possesses. Pac-Man and his camp were looking for the opportunity to show his skills weren't waning, and Saturday's fight proved that without a shadow of a doubt.
For the boxing fans who missed the initial airing of the fight or just want to see Pacquiao dominate Algieri once again, the replay this Saturday night will be must-watch television.
