Pacquiao vs. Algieri Fight: Match Results, Reaction from Welterweight Title Bout

Rob BlanchetteNov 24, 2014

Manny Pacquiao is back to his best—that was the reaction of the people who saw his incredible display against the King of New York, Chris Algieri.

The Pacman floored his opponent six times and took a unanimous points victory, winning on each judges card: 119-103, 109-103 and 120-102.

The performance was a dramatic return to form by the Filipino, and after the fight he immediately called out Floyd Mayweather and challenged him to a bout.

During the battle, Algieri offered little resistance as Pacquiao dominated him, smashing him from pillar to post.

It was a brutal deconstruction by the world great and he seems to be back to the standards of a few years previous.

ESPN's Skip Bayless gave Algieri credit for making it the distance when he seemed destined to be knocked out:

But despite going the distance, Algieri's tactics were negative and wooden, and it always appeared he would lose his unbeaten record at the 35-year-old's hands.

He had little to offer in terms of offence and looked very uncomfortable at times, crushed by fear and anxiety.

Todd Grisham of ESPN criticised his approach and laid the blame at the feet of those in his corner:

After the contest, there was just one thing on Pacman's mind—and that was Mayweather.

The fighter made it succinct that there is just one fight he now craves and he threw the gauntlet down to Money.

Pacquiao was clear he wishes to fight the pound-for-pound legend soon, as the bout has been long overdue, as cited by ESPN's Dan Rafael:

Pacman's words would have been music to the ears of fight fans across the planet and it now seems that the ultimate superfight could be on.

Pacquiao was all business on Saturday night and his performance would have sent shivers down the Moneyman's spine.

Mayweather knows a fight against Pacquiao would generate huge business and television money, but does he really want to fight him when he is in this kind of shape?

That question is yet to be answered but it seems that Pacman wants the chance to seal his legacy against the greatest fighter of his generation.

In the cold light of day, Algieri could not live with Pacquiao and he did well to somehow survive.

The speed and brutality were back from the aging fighter—who certainly looked younger than his age as he went about his business in the ring.

We will wait and see if the dream fight comes off, as promoters will now work hard to make it happen—but Pacman looks ready and he will be the ultimate test for Mayweather if the two meet in 2015.
