ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix 2014: Results, Top Finishers from France

Rob BlanchetteNov 23, 2014

The ISU figure skating grand prix from Bordeaux was dominated by two Russian teenagers who claimed the men's and women's events at the Trophee Eric Bompard on Saturday.

The prodigal talents of Elena Radionova and Maxim Kovtun took the plaudits to claim victory for their country in the Short Program.

And Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov claimed yet another gold medal each to add to the ones they have recently collected in Moscow—in the Pairs Short Program.

Radionova started the rush of golds for her nation as the 15-year-old beat fellow teammate Julia Lipnitskaya and former champion skater Ashley Wagner of the USA.

The youngster beat her former best overall score to win the day—scoring 203.92, in her first season with the senior circuit.

The future world star danced to Rachmaninov and hit seven triple jumps and three combinations to blow her competition out of the water.

And she spoke after her triumph, saying with modestly and intelligence that she can still very much improve, per ChannelNewsAsia.com:

"There's no limit to perfection. I can improve on my jumps, spins, steps—There's still a lot of work to be done."

And Olympic sports writer Philip Hersh also criticised the teen, saying her music "swallowed her up," affecting her overall performance:

Kovtun took the men's title after main challengers Tatsuki Machida and Denis Ten both made mistakes in their free skate—falling on the ice.

Kovtun was delighted he had lived up to his burgeoning reputation and displayed his joy, per ChannelNewsdAsia.com:

"I'm just glad that after yesterday's performance I didn't break down. My coaches did a lot to build me up."

The Russian dominance is really starting to show, and these young athletes could take future Olympic Games by storm. Radionova is a special talent and at just 15, she has so much natural ability and grace.

There are parts of her routine that need to be addressed—but nothing that cannot be rectified as she matures into her status as one of the world's greats.
