WWE Survivor Series 2014: Matches with Biggest Historical Implications

Erik BeastonNov 23, 2014

One look at the history of the Survivor Series pay-per-view indicates that the annual November spectacular is home to some of the most historically significant bouts in World Wrestling Entertainment's 50-year history.

The Rock not only made his debut at the event but also captured his first WWE Championship, as did The Undertaker. The punishing, unforgiving Elimination Chamber was unleashed on the world of sports-entertainment, guaranteeing pain and suffering for any man determined to experience championship glory. Bret Hart's legendary career with the company came to an end in the controversial Montreal Screwjob.

And in 2012, 15 years after one iconic star's departure, three brash young competitors made their debuts and changed the course of WWE forever as Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns introduced fans to The Shield.

Sunday evening, Survivor Series will once again be home to history, as either The Authority will be ousted from power or Dolph Ziggler, Big Show, Erick Rowan and Ryback will lose their jobs. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon's reign of terror will end courtesy of Team Cena, or else the company will be down four very talented midcard stars.

But the main event is not the only match sporting historical implications. Which other bout could have a huge impact on WWE programming both in the short- and long-term?

Let's take a look.

Traditional Survivor Series Tag Team Elimination Match: Team Cena vs. Team Authority

Above and beyond being the main event of one of WWE's biggest shows of the year and the most hyped contest on the card, this match could very well signal the conclusion of an angle that has dominated WWE programming for over a year.

Since SummerSlam 2013, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon have ruled over WWE in an angle that led to the rise and fall of Daniel Bryan, the deconstruction of The Shield, the humiliation of The Big Show, the split of the Bella Twins and what appears to be the return to babyface status of Randy Orton.

Through it all, the most powerful couple in WWE has been knocked down but have always managed to come back more furious and hell-bent on vengeance than ever before.

WWE Creative has never really allowed them to look weak or desperate. They always manage to lash out at the talent that works under them, asserting their dominance and superiority.

That could all change Sunday night, as a Team Authority loss will see them not only knocked off their perch but banished from power in WWE.

If that were to happen, it would signal the beginning of a new day in WWE, a new day that has nothing to do with Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods, but one that instead serves as a bit of a reset for the entire creative direction of the product.

Divas Championship Match: AJ Lee vs. Nikki Bella

Not since the beginning of the Total Divas reality show has a current cast member held the Divas Championship.

That could, and should, change come Sunday night's Survivor Series.

Nikki Bella has been gaining momentum as a heel and is the favorite to leave St. Louis with the title around her waist. Recent booking has seen her getting some comeuppance for her heelish ways, and based on WWE's 50/50 booking strategy, that would seem to indicate that she will beat AJ and reign over the Divas division as champion.

How WWE handles that on the E! Network show would be interesting to see. It is a story those in charge of the show have not had to tell to this point. Jealousy will surely reign supreme, and cattiness will ensue as the creators of the show continue to do a better job of booking the female talent than WWE's writing staff.
