Pacquiao vs. Algieri Highlights: Full Recap of Pac-Man's Impressive Win

Matt JonesNov 23, 2014

Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao’s distinguished boxing career reads like a stunning highlight reel, and the Filipino superstar added a few more scintillating chapters to it during a forensic dismantling of Chris “King of New York” Algieri.

Pacquiao knocked his challenger down a staggering six times on his way to a unanimous points decision, reaffirming his status as one of the finest fighters on the planet. Algieri showcased an admirable durability to see the final bell, but he was on the end of a barrage from Pac-Man that left the Macau crowd purring.

ESPN’s Dan Rafael summarized how the action played out:

Pacquiao set the tone from the very first bell, as his superior skills were on display from the beginning. The 35-year-old showcased sharper instincts, a tighter defence and astute footwork during the first round, leaving Algieri under no illusions about the massive task at hand.

Indeed, the challenger was left grasping at thin air during the first three minutes, as noted here by Yahoo's Kevin Iole:

Pac-Man’s dominance manifested in the form of something tangible in Round 2 when he scored his first knockdown. Initially, it looked as though Algieri had slipped, but it was an ominous sign of things to come for the challenger as the Filipino continued to land at will. Pacquiao was absorbing all of the American’s pressure with ease too, as detailed here by Top Rank Boxing:

Algieri managed to settle a little better in Rounds 4 and 5, but Pac-Man upped the ante as the fight motored towards the halfway point. Pacquiao hammered his opponent in the sixth round, scoring two knockdowns and—a highly unlikely Algieri knockout aside—all but sealing victory.

In his previous outing, King of New York battled back from two knockdowns against Ruslan Provodnikov to take victory, but he was unable to conjure a similar comeback here, as Pacquiao kept the relentless pressure on his opponent. Algieri toiled in the face of a barrage from Pac-Man and never looked like launching a counter-attack.

The latter rounds followed a similar pattern, as Pacquiao went in search of a stoppage inside the distance. Round 9 was arguably the most one-sided of the entire bout, as Algieri was knocked down two more timesthe first after a shuddering left from Pac-Man and the second after a flurry of punches on the follow-up.

Another left hand knocked Algieri down for a sixth time in Round 10 as the American staggered through the last two rounds to see the final bell. ESPN’s Skip Bayless paid tribute to the New Yorker's fortitude:

But almost immediately, Pacquiao’s thoughts turned to a potential superfight with Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. Fans have long craved the bout, but for various reasons, it has yet to happen. Pacquiao was in a boisterous mood when quizzed on the prospect of a stellar showdown, though.

“I want that fight," he said afterward, per The Guardian. “The fans deserve that fight."

Bleacher Report’s Lyle Fitzsimmons looked at what options are open to Pac-Man after his latest stunning performance:

ESPN's Rafael ran the rule over the prospects of the superfight happening:

"

After the win against Algieri, HBO's Max Kellerman asked Pacquiao about the fight. Pacquiao immediately launched into his commercial mode.

"He is going to fight me? Yes! Yes!" Pacquiao joked.

All joking aside, one can only hope Mayweather will face him. There is nothing left for either of them to prove, and no other fight the public wants from either.

"

For boxing fans in every corner of the globe, only a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather showdown would be enough to sate appetites, especially with the Filipino calling out the American superstar in the wake of this demolition job.

Undeniably, other options are open to Pacquiao, such as a fifth scrap with Juan Manuel Marquez. But it seems only one man is in Pacquiao’s sights at this juncture, and while his glittering career is bristling with iconic moments and myriad accolades, you suspect none would top a triumph over Mayweather.
