Pacquiao vs. Algieri Replay: When and How to Relive Championship Fight

Tom SunderlandNov 23, 2014

Manny Pacquiao showcased a vicious streak in Saturday's destruction of Chris Algieri, winning the bout via unanimous decision to defend his WBO welterweight belt.

It was a classic demonstration of the quality the Filipino can produceeven at the age of 35and one that Pac-Man fans may want to take in again. HBO confirmed the replay will be shown next Saturday, Nov. 29:

It won't be seen as a classic among Pacquiao's 64 career fights by any means. Algieri was being tipped as one who could upset the champion's trajectory but proved to be little more than a bump on Pac-Man's radar.

Nevertheless, it's not often you see a pugilist knocked down six times without the referee stepping in.

As has almost become customary in the wake of a Pacquiao win, talk of a Floyd Mayweather fight has been brought to the fore once again as a result of this latest display.

Bleacher Report's Stephen Nelson spoke with Lyle Fitzsimmons following the mauling in Macau to discuss the possibility of a meeting against Money:

Full credit should go to the previously unbeaten Algieri for the manner in which he responded to the doom that descended upon him. There aren't many who could suffer six knockdowns against Pacquiao and struggle on to meet the final bell.

However, as SportsCenter tells us, the American's record now reads 20-1-0, and it wasn't often that he managed to rock the boat before all three judges called the match in favour of Pacquiao:

Prior to this fight, the win over Ruslan Provodnikov in June was by some distance Algieri's greatest professional achievement to date.

But Pacquiao was simply in another realm to his victim, cheered on by a Chinese audience that comprised a strong Filipino contingent.

While Pacquiao may be in the twilight period of his career, Algieri quickly found that succeeding at this level will require a considerable improvement on all fronts.

That being said, Ryan Songalia of The Ring Magazine gave the 30-year-old his backing in being able to recover from such a setback, one that could ultimately prove useful in elevating himself:

Pacquiao's third victory in a row would serve in banishing the memories of that horrific 2012, a year that saw him record successive defeats for the first time in his career, losing to Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Saturday's bout reminds us that Pac-Man, while edging toward the latter stages of his career, can still be a terror inside the ring, and this is one moment he won't be quick to forget as he continues his resurgence.
