Pacquiao vs. Algieri Purse: Breaking Down Prize Money Payouts for Both Fighters

James DudkoNov 23, 2014

The biggest payday of his career may provide some consolation for Chris Algieri after he was totally outfought by Manny Pacquiao with the WBO welterweight belt on the line.

Algieri didn't come close to matching Pacquiao punch for punch during what proved to be an embarrassingly one-sided unanimous decision. His jab-first, cagey approach was no match for Pacquiao's relentless series of combination punching.

In the aftermath, Algieri is left to count a hefty payout. ESPN.com reporter Dan Rafael broke down the initially projected payouts for both fighters:

Not wanting to discount Algieri a few dollars, Rafael soon amended his figures with a slight tweak in favour of the challenger:

Given the sheer volume of punishment he withstood, many may feel Algieri merits this level of fiscal compensation. The game—but still raw—contender suffered six knockdowns, including one that prompted a mandatory eight-count in the 10th round.

Despite the fact 36-year-old Pacquiao is undoubtedly nearing the twilight of his career, he still had the caliber to pocket $25 million without breaking a sweat.

However, even that eye-popping sum would look tame next to what Pacquiao would likely make if he can finally make a headline fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

After dispatching Algieri, Pacquiao certainly wasn't shy about wanting to eventually meet his marquee rival in the ring, per Los Angeles Times writer Lance Pugmire:

Even before beating Algieri in Macau, Pacquiao was clear he wants to test himself against Mayweather. "I would like it to happen. I've told him my phone line is open 24 hours, seven days a week," he said, per BBC Sport.

Arguably the two finest pound-for-pound fighters of their generation, Pacquiao and 38-year-old Mayweather are running out of time to make this dream bout a reality, but the Filipino icon continues to earn big paydays while he waits.
