Pacquiao vs. Algieri Fight: Result and Top Moments After Multiple Knockdowns
Chris Algieri could reasonably claim he slipped once. However, he can't so easily explain or excuse the five other times Manny Pacquiao sent him tumbling to the mat.
Six knockdowns were the highlight of one of the most emphatic wins of Pacquiao's celebrated career. It was a victory that saw him retain his WBO welterweight belt, per the governing body's official Twitter feed:
Let's take a closer look at how Pacquiao consistently put Algieri down on Saturday.
Unfortunate Slip Gets Things Started in Round 2
After struggling to deal with the speed of Pacquiao's combination punching during the opening round, Algieri lost his footing in Round 2. Perhaps still bewildered by his decorated opponent's sudden and skilled onslaught, Algieri couldn't keep his balance as he backed away.
Box Nation's official Twitter account detailed the apparent slip that was still judged to be an official knockdown:
It was a cruel early blow for Algieri, but far worse soon followed.
Pacquiao Drops His Man Twice in Round 6
Algieri's ability to snatch the fifth round, his lone triumph of the night, irked Pacquiao. It prompted a swift and brutal barrage of shots as the bell sounded to signal the start of the sixth.
Box Nation and Top Rank Boxing chronicled how Pacquiao's sudden acceleration in hand speed overwhelmed Algieri in a spectacular double blow:
At this point in the fight, Algieri couldn't see the shots coming quickly enough to react and form a defence. Pacquiao was weaving underneath his taller challenger's tame jab and ruthlessly working the body before going upstairs with hooks and overhand shots to the head.
Although Algieri clung on, it wouldn't be long before he again found himself on the canvas.
Algieri Felled Two More Times in the Ninth
Pacquiao's left hand caused Algieri problems all night. He didn't avoid it in the sixth and couldn't escape it during the ninth:
More work with the left soon followed, according to HBO Boxing:
By now, Pacquiao's smart combinations were making Algieri look well and truly out of his depth. He simply had no answers for the Filipino's clever and subtle use of his best weapon.
Unfortunately, Algieri's meetings with the mat weren't quite over.
Pacquiao Scores Knockdown No. 6 in Round 10
Pacquiao notched the sixth and final knockdown of the night after deftly avoiding some rare Algieri offence. The challenger attempted an uppercut but was swatted side, before another cross shot sent him down.
Pacquiao's power, while still ferocious, isn't quite what it was during his peak years. However, flooring Algieri six times showed he still knows how to string his punches together.
Rather than a haymaker, it's now a flurry that dooms Pacquiao's opponents. The more methodical, high-volume style is something that would ask serious questions of Floyd Mayweather, should they ever meet.
