Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather: Pac-Man Wants Money After Easy Win

Tim KeeneyNov 22, 2014

With so many potential obstacles, and both fighters closer to age 40 than they are to 30, a Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather megafight will always feel like a long shot.

But as of Saturday night, a very important party is on board with the idea.

Pac-Man, fresh off a clinical beating of Chris Algieri, expressed his desire in taking on the undefeated pound-for-pound champion, via Top Rank Boxing's Twitter feed:

While "Money-Pac" is still very much a pipe dream at this point, Saturday's result was crucial in at least keeping that dream alive. Mayweather has continued to dispose of his opponents in relatively easy fashionalthough Marcos Maidana had his moments in the first fightand if Pacquiao didn't trounce Algieri, there was little chance anyone would believe he could go toe-to-toe with the 37-year-old American.

Pacquiao needed a convincing performance, and he got just that. He absolutely destroyed Algieri, knocking him to the canvas six times and controlling the fight from start to finish.

Boxing analyst Ed Tolentino, via ABS-CBN News in the Philippines, recognized vintage Pacquiao in the dominant win:

It's clear after Saturday night that Pacquiao needs to face a better opponent. There are plenty of fighters to play that role, but Mayweather is undoubtedly the one fans would like to see most.

For those still holding out hope that the two greatest fighters of their generation will touch gloves and duke it out, Pacquaio's trainer Freddie Roach provided some highly encouraging post-fight comments, via Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole:

It's okay to remain skeptical. The Pacquiao-Mayweather drama has disappointed before, and there are still certain difficult hurdlesmostly of the monetary nature—that are going to have to be cleared before the megafight happens.

But this is undoubtedly an idea that's gaining steam after Pacquiao's performance on Saturday. And for something so desired that has essentially been dismissed as impossible over the last two years, that's all you can ask for.

We're still a long ways out, but we're at least moving in the right direction.
