Pacquiao vs. Algieri Results: Judges' Scorecards, Purse Payout and More

Joseph ZuckerNov 22, 2014

Well, that was anticlimactic. Manny Pacquiao wasted little time gaining an advantage over Chris Algieri on Saturday night in Macau, and he never let up until the final bell.

Pacquiao retained his WBO welterweight title in a unanimous decision. The judges scored it 119-103, 119-103 and 120-102, per HBO Boxing:

Pac-Man was proud of his performance in the ring:

The scores illustrate just how far off Algieri was from being genuinely competitive in this fight. He started slowly out of the gates and never showed much offense throughout the rest of the night. It was like the rope-a-dope strategy without the late comeback.

In total, Pacquiao recorded six knockdowns. He was absolutely relentless, and when he sensed an opening, he attacked. Algieri had little recourse but to put his hands up and prepare for the next onslaught.

You're unlikely to see a more one-sided result in such a high-profile bout for some time.

One of the more unintentionally funny moments of the night came from Algieri's trainer, Tim Lane, telling the HBO crew in the ninth that Pacquiao was going down in the 10th; that was his grand strategy.

As he was saying that, Pacquiao sent Algieri to the canvas.

Lane had a positivity that bordered on delusion. Bleacher Report's Kevin McRae was critical of Lane's advice considering how badly Algieri was getting beaten:

The plus side is that Algieri didn't leave Macau completely empty-handed. According to ESPN.com's Dan Rafael, he earned $1.67 million for the fight, which pales in comparison to Pacquiao's roughly $25 million purse:

That's a nice paycheck for less than an hour of work.

When measuring this fight with Pacquiao's larger resume, it will hardly register as a blip. Some were critical of Pacquiao scheduling Algieri in the first place, viewing the situation as lose-lose for Pac-Man. He essentially gains nothing with a win, while a loss would've done major harm to his reputation.

Registering a knockout victory would've helped Pacquiao take something more positive out of the victory, but he was unable to keep Algieri down for the 10 count.

That makes it nine fights in a row that the champion's failed to win via KO, which feels like a lifetime, per ESPN Stats & Info:

If anything, Pacquiao's win keeps him in line for a potential date with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Who knows if that will ever actually happen? At the very least, it isn't closer to not happening. The event remains as profitable and alluring as it was before Saturday.

SportsCenter unveiled the top of ESPN's pound-for-pound rankings, which includes Mayweather at No. 1 and Pac-Man right behind him:

Pacquiao was asked about fighting Mayweather, and he only fanned the flames, per CBS Sports:

ESPN's Skip Bayless remains firmly in the camp that the superfight will never happen. He doesn't think Mayweather will be up for it:

Boxing is like professional wrestling in that as long as money can be made, nothing's outside the realm of possibility. The bitterest of rivals can be friends if just for one night in the name of the dollar bill.

Mayweather and Pacquiao already have untold millions in the bank, but the purse from that fight would be astronomical.

With both fighters in the twilight of their careers, time is running out for this to be an attractive fight.
