Ruslan Provodnikov vs. Jose Luis Castillo: Preview and Prediction

Briggs SeekinsNov 23, 2014

This Friday in Moscow, Siberian slugger Ruslan Provodnikov returns to action against Mexican great Jose Luis Castillo. Provodnikov is trying to get back on track after losing by split decision to Chris Algieri last June.

For Castillo, at age 40, it's the opportunity to make one last run in what has already been a terrific career.

These have been two of the sport's most fan-friendly fighters in this century. I'd be surprised if this one makes it to the final bell.

Jose Luis Castillo is not just 40. He's 40 with a ton of miles on the odometer. He's been in wars and has been knocked out seven times.

Castillo is the longer, taller fighter here. He also fought his best years at lightweight. Provodnikov is incredibly compact and strong for a welterweight.

Main Storylines

2 of 7

Jose Luis Castillo is a boxing legend. His first fight with Diego Corrales in 2005 is arguably the greatest fight of this century. Castillo lost by TKO in Round 10 but knocked Corrales out in Round 4 of a rematch five months later.

Castillo also gave pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather two of the toughest fights of his career in 2002. A large percentage of fans believe Castillo should have won the first fight.

But Castillo is 40 and hasn't had a significant fight since 2007, when he was knocked out by Ricky Hatton. At this point, it's tough not to cringe at the thought of him facing the monstrous Ruslan Provodnikov.

Provodnikov lost a fight-of-the-year war to Timothy Bradley in March 2013 but nearly knocked the pound-for-pound star out three times during the fight. It took Bradley months to recover.

In October of last year, Provodnikov captured the WBO light welterweight belt when he hammered tough Mike Alvarado and stopped him in Round 10.

He lost a hotly contested split decision to Chris Algieri last June. Provodnikov knocked Algieri down twice in the first round and shut one of his eyes.

As a result of that fight, Algieri got a date with Manny Pacquiao on pay-per-view. Provodnikov has ended up fighting back in Russia against an over-the-hill star in a fight that won't be broadcast in the United States.

Strengths

3 of 7

Ruslan Provodnikov is as rugged and tough as the Siberian winters that forged him. He is very hard to hurt and excels at hurting others. Boxing is, above all, a hurting game, so this is an extremely valuable intangible.

He is relentless at cutting off the ring and applying pressure. He has economic footwork and is strong physically.

Jose Luis Castillo is a skilled boxer-brawler. He is an outstanding pressure fighter. He lowers levels well in the pocket and pounds away to the body and head.

Castillo has a terrific left hook and throws it well off the jab, the right uppercut and the overhand right. He has as much experience as anybody in the sport at the kind of fight that Provodnikov imposes.

Weaknesses

4 of 7

Ruslan Provodnikov has a lot of trouble against boxers who can control range and force him to chase. He's a come-forward fighter and struggles when forced to adjust to an opponent who can do something else.

His only losses have come against technical fighters who can move well.

Jose Luis Castillo is 40, and he has been through wars. He's never been a very difficult opponent to hit, and over the years, he has been hit a lot.

The things that Castillo does best, such as standing in the pocket and trading, are what will make him most vulnerable against a powerful fighter like Provodnikov, especially at this point in his career.

Ruslan Provodnikov Will Win If...

5 of 7

Jose Luis Castillo is exactly the kind of fighter that Ruslan Provodnikov prefers to fight. The Mexican legend is a warrior who stands in the pockets and slugs it out.

Provodnikov should cruise in this fight with a very similar performance to the one he used to beat Mike Alvarado last October. He needs to stay in front of Castillo, with his chin tucked behind his lead shoulder. When Castillo jabs, Provodnikov should lower his level and step into the pocket, looking to hammer the body.

He is skilled fighter in close range. That's where Castillo is most comfortable, as well. Provodnikov should attempt to pressure and hurt Castillo early in the fight in an effort to force the veteran to fall back on what is most familiar to him.

The kind of fight that made Castillo a legend is the kind of fight Provodnikov wants. At this point in time, the tough Russian is as good at that sort of fight as anybody in the sport.

Jose Luis Castillo Will Win If...

6 of 7

Jose Luis Castillo has a tough test in front of him this weekend in Russia. In his prime, he was an outstanding pressure fighter. But the type of fight that made him a legend will be a very dangerous proposition for him against Provodnikov, who is 10 years younger and physically stronger.

Castillo needs to use his length and experience. He should pump a stiff jab to disrupt Provodnikov's own offense and then look to follow it with a right uppercut or lead hook.

The best time to land a good shot on Provodnikov is when he is on the outside. He tends to square up out there, and a straight punch can snap his head back. By the time Provodnikov slips inside, his chin is tucked safely behind his shoulder, and he's prepared to take even a hard punch.

So Castillo needs to win this fight at the middle range. He can use his skill as a pressure fighter to exchange with Provodnikov long enough to move back and catch him with hooks from a further distance.

If the veteran is going to have a chance to win this fight, he's going to do it by controlling the distance and tempo.

Prediction

7 of 7

If this fight had taken place 10 years ago, it would have been one of the most anticipated bouts of the year, featured on premium cable. And I would have liked Castillo's chances.

But he is 40 now and doesn't have the sort of style that ages well. Since his time as a major star between 2000 and 2005, he's degraded into a journeyman.

Castillo has been stopped seven times, and Provodnikov is going to make it eight. I honestly hate to see a guy who has given the fans so much in his career stepping into the ring for such a dangerous fight at such an advanced age.

Provodnikov is going to be very motivated for this fight, and he'll be close to home for it. Everything is in his favor here.

I expect Provodnikov to push Castillo around in close and deal with the veteran's power while hammering away with his own heavy shots. In his prime, Castillo was a better fighter than Mike Alvarado. But he's not at this point.

This fight will look a lot like Provodnikov vs. Alvarado. Castillo will take a beating and get stopped in the last third of the fight.

Provodnikov will hopefully be back in the U.S., fighting on television again his next time out. Despite losing a contested decision to Chris Algieri, he's one of the most fan-friendly competitors in the sport. There are a ton of great fights for him that fans would love to watch.
