Florida State Football: Will Jameis Winston Earn Heisman Invite This Year?

Sean FryeNov 22, 2014

Is Jameis Winston leading his team to tough victories against giant killers or underperforming against subpar competition?

Is he great or lucky? Social pariah or face of the program?

Either way you weave the polarizing tale titled "Famous Jameis," the facts are undeniable. He's never lost as the starter at Florida State, and Saturday's comeback win against Boston College showed why he'll get a Heisman invite to New York City.

For you analysts out there, Winston has racked up 19 touchdowns through the air, three more on the ground and 3,125 yards passing through 10 games. His lone black mark statistically is the 13 interceptions he's thrown.

But the wins speak so loudly, especially since the Seminoles have won an FBS-best 27 in a row. And it's in crunch time that Jimbo Fisher goes with his tried and true—Winston.

Take Saturday's 20-17 win over the Eagles, as well as last week's come-from-behind win over Miami.

Against Boston College, after the Eagles missed what would've been a go-ahead field goal with four-and-a-half minutes to play, the Seminoles took over at their own 26. Winston went 3-of-3 on this drive while not taking any risks. He found Rashad Greene twice and Dalvin Cook once for 33 total yards—both passes to Greene were for first downs.

In the game-winning fourth-quarter drive that Winston engineered against The U last week—it sure seems like he has a lot of those, huh?—he was involved in every play except the last two runs by Cook. After an incomplete pass to start the drive, he found Greene for 17 yards. He then ran for 18 yards only to have the play called back on a hold.

The next play, he finds Cook for 14 yards to the Miami 45. The rest is history, and it was a quieting moment for the Winston detractors—something he let everybody in Sun Life Stadium know.

The last two games are just the latest examples of Winston working second-half and fourth-quarter magic. He's done it against Louisville, Notre Dame and even fended off a feisty Oklahoma State squad in Week 1.

How many guys in the nation do you really trust to lead a fourth-quarter comeback? Guarantee everybody on that list will be in New York.

Now, for the 800-pound gorilla in the room. We all know what Winston's done (crab legs), as well as what he's been accused of (autographs, sexual assault). He was even caught shoving an official on Saturday prior to the snap, although the context of that exchange is unknown.

One possible explanation for the latest incident is that the ref was allowing the Eagles to substitute. In that case, as Fox Sports' Mike Pereira writes, Winston should've been ejected.

How all that will play into the minds of Heisman voters is a wild card.

We know at least one voter—former Heisman winner Doug Flutie—says that the growing scandals hurt Winston's chances for a second bid.

But the numbers and the wins don't lie. The City That Never Sleeps can't sleep on Winston when it comes to the Heisman Trophy presentation.
