Pacquiao vs. Algieri Decision: Judges' Scorecard and Round-by-Round Stats

Nate LoopNov 22, 2014

Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2) put on a brilliant display of boxing on Saturday night at The Venetian Macao in Macau, China, knocking upstart challenger Chris Algieri (20-1-0) down six times en route to a 12-round, unanimous decision victory.

HBO Boxing showed the wild disparity in the two fighter's scores:

At 35 years old, Pacquiao needed a win in order to stay relevant in the boxing world. He split his last four results, one of which was a stunning knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012.

Fans hoping for a return of the fearless brawler that won titles in eight different weight classes should be pleased with the outcome. Algieri never had a chance.

Algieri was on his toes early on, bouncing around the ring and trying to stay out of Pacquiao's range. They spent much of the first round feeling each other out, with Pacquiao biding his time and waiting for openings to Algieri's midsection. All in all, there were few punches of note after one round, per HBO Boxing:

The second round was similar to the first, although Pacquiao picked up the intensity and landed a few stinging combinations to Algieri's torso. Algieri went almost exclusively with the left jab in the early goings, trying desperately to keep his aggressive opponent at bay with his five-inch advantage in reach.

Algieri's right hand stayed glued to the side of his head, a necessary defensive posture that prevented him from getting pummeled. However, Pacquiao would unleash a succession of quick straights that ended with Algieri going to the canvas in the second round, although it looked like a slip took him down, not the punch itself.

The fight continued apace through the first four rounds. BoxingScene's Ryan Maquinina had the stats through four, via Compubox:

Clearly, Pacquiao didn't respect Algieri's power. The 30-year-old former kickboxer had just eight knockouts in 20 career fights to this point, none of them against an opponent of note. He was on the defensive for much of the fight, failing to unleash his right hand whenever Pacquiao came inside. HBO Boxing provided an update on his punch rate through five rounds, well off his usual pace:

The sixth round was a mess for Algieri. Pacquiao stalked him around the ring, unleashing furious combinations and you could practically see Algieri's defense splitting at the seams. In the middle of the round, Algieri swung for the fences with a big right hook, but Pacquiao ducked it and landed a left cross flush on his challenger's chin and sending him somersaulting back onto the canvas.

Algieri did his best to shake it off, but he would again get caught by a power punch from Pacquiao just a few seconds later and went to his knees for a moment, eliciting yet another countdown from the referee.

SportsCenter noted he was gaining complete control of the fight:

Of the three knockdowns, only the second one visibly stunned Algieri. The first could be argued as a slip and Algieri shook off the third quickly. Indeed, he was clearly frustrated in himself, knowing he had lost crucial points and would almost certainly need a knockout to have a chance at victory.

HBO Boxing provided a look at the stats from the seventh round:

The ninth round was a bloodbath. Pacquiao had Algieri's twitchy defensive style completely figured out, and stung the challenger every time he opened up for a combination.

Midway through the round, Algieri scored a glancing blow to Pacquiao's face, only for the Filipino legend to move right through the punch and crush Algieri with a battering of a straight left. Algieri went flying backward, and the referee went to a nine count but allowed him to carry on.

Pacquiao would daze Algieri again later in the round, bringing the crowd at Cotai Arena to its feet. ESPN's Dan Rafael kept count of the mayhem for those losing track of the carnage in the ring:

He scored yet another knockdown in the 10th, but Algieri forged ahead bravely. Roy Jones Jr., borrowing a phrase from Algieri's trainer, saw that Pacquiao was at the full height of his capabilities toward the end of the fight:

Ring Magazine's Ryan Songalia noted Algieri's lack of power, which Pacquiao took as a green light to surge forward:

The final two rounds were essentially an extended eulogy for Algieri. He hardly landed a punch of note, although the bounce and energy in his spindly legs somehow returned. When the final bell sounded, there was no doubt about the outcome. HBO Boxing provided a look at a celebratory Pacquiao:

Pacquiao's impressive display will have many clamoring for the long-awaited bout against Floyd Mayweather, which has taken on mythical proportions at this point. His speed, power and brawler's mentality were all readily apparent against Algieri, who is likely to disappear into the ranks of mid-tier boxers after this poor showing.

Pairing Pacquiao's offense against Mayweather's surgically precise defense would be a dream matchup even at their relatively advanced ages.

There are other worthy challengers for Pacquiao to consider—including Jessie Vargas, who scored an impressive win over Antonio DeMarco on the undercard—but this result should have most people hoping the legendary boxer chooses the best fighter available in 2015.
