Oklahoma Football: 2015 Recruits Sooners Must Land

Sebastian LenaNov 21, 2014

As we move closer and closer to national signing day, the Oklahoma Sooners must begin to lock down their targeted recruits.

With much of the 2014 season already in the books, the Sooners have gotten a good opportunity to evaluate their team. More specifically, the coaching staff should now have a good grasp of the areas that could use some help.

With that in mind, here are some 2015 recruits Oklahoma must land.

OG Josh Wariboko

1 of 5

Back in June 2013, Wariboko made Sooner Nation happy when he announced his commitment to the crimson and cream. Unfortunately, 10 months later, the Oklahoma City product had a change of mind, decommitting from Oklahoma.

But Wariboko isn’t opposed to coming back to the Sooners—the team is still among his final eight. He just wants to keep his options open.

“I knew I wanted to take some more trips without bringing into question my integrity or my family’s integrity,” he said, per Rivals.com’s Josh McCuistion. "I didn’t want to say I was committed and take trips— that didn’t seem right."

4-star prospect out of Casady School, Wariboko has the size, quickness and strength the Oklahoma coaching staff desires.

Although the team currently has one of the top offensive lines in the country, the Sooners will be in need of help soon. That’s because three of the team’s starting linemen are seniors.

Oklahoma can’t afford to miss out on the big man.

LB Anthony Wheeler

The Sooners have some talent in linebackers Dominique Alexander and Eric Striker. However, after those two, the depth is slim.

Enter 4-star prospect Anthony Wheeler.

A Skyline High product, Wheeler has the size (6'2", 225 pounds) and athleticism that make him a coveted linebacker. Although he has yet to make an official visit, he’s made it clear that the Sooners are still his favorite, per The Football Brainiacs.

He still appears to be a bit raw. But with the proper coaching, Wheeler can turn out to be a key playmaker for the Oklahoma defense.

OT Martinas Rankin

We’ve already touched on the offensive line, and if Josh Wariboko decides against Oklahoma, there are other options.

One such option is 4-star prospect Martinas Rankin. A 6'5" 300-pounder, Rankin has the size and frame that match up well with the current group of imposing offensive linemen that the Sooners boast.

With a group of seniors departing the offensive line, Oklahoma could use all the depth it can get at the position.

Mississippi State and Ole Miss are doing their best to keep the Perkinston, Mississsippi, native close to home. But don’t be surprised if the Sooners can pry Rankin out of his home state.

ATH Stanley Norman

4 of 5

As mentioned earlier, the Oklahoma secondary could use all the help it could get.

While Iman Marshall might be a tough get, 4-star prospect Stanley Norman is a lot more reasonable. The 6-foot 180-pounder has the athleticism to play either wide receiver or cornerback.

Adding Norman would be a great way to help boost the depth at secondary. He may not be ready to play immediately, but with the way the Sooners have been playing this season, they might have no choice but to give him firsthand experience.

Louisville and UCLA are two teams making a strong push for him.

It would be a shame if Oklahoma couldn’t land him.

CB Iman Marshall

5 of 5

It’s no secret that the Sooners need help in the secondary.

Through 10 games, the team ranks No. 121 against the pass (291.5 yards per game). Oklahoma has conceded 18 passing touchdowns and only intercepted 10 passes.

Bringing in 5-star prospect Iman Marshall—the No. 4 overall prospect in the class—would go a long way toward fixing those deficiencies.

Marshall has tremendous instincts and top-notch recovery speed that make him destined to be a great college football defensive back. Already, he’s fielding offers from USC, Florida State, LSU, Michigan and Notre Dame, along with the Sooners.

As one of the schools that got one of his five official visits, per Rivals.com’s Adam Gorney, Oklahoma has got to be feeling confident.

Given that Marshall hails from California, pulling him away from USC will be a tough get. But with recent prospects out of California on board—Michiah Quick and Joe Mixon come to mind—it’s a definite possibility.

The Sooners should do everything in their power to try to reel Marshall in.
