Main Event Preview
The overarching question heading into the fight is whether Algieri is a serious threat to upset a fighter of Pacquiao's caliber. It's one without a consensus answer.
At least in part, that's because this bout represents a major step up in class for the underdog. He deserves credit for scoring a victory over Ruslan Provodnikov last time out to capture the WBO light welterweight title. But this is on another level.
The motivation is certainly there. If Algieri can figure out a way to keep his undefeated mark intact with a win over Pac-Man, it should be a boon for his career moving forward.
But this is a seemingly reinvigorated Pacquiao. He was at a career crossroads after back-to-back losses to Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez before getting back on track with convincing victories over Brandon Rios and Bradley in the rematch.
He's happy about where his level of performance currently stands, as Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports noted during a pre-fight press conference:
If that's the case, Algieri faces an even more uphill battle than the odds indicate. At his peak the combination of power and speed made Pacquiao virtually unstoppable. While things tend to get overstated ahead of fights, if he's back in top form, watch out.
In a piece for ESPN, Pac-Man said that, during his preparations for this bout, he discovered that his love for the sport remains strong.
"As I have said before, boxing is my passion and public service is my calling. As I approach my title defense against Chris Algieri I have found that my passion for boxing has increased," he said. "I do not feel old. I feel great and I find I am able to train as hard as I always have and I enjoy it. More importantly, I still enjoy boxing—a lot."
That's bad news for Algieri. If he was at his absolute best and Pacquiao had an off day, there would be an opportunity to shock the boxing world. But if the Filipino star is clicking on all cylinders, the bout could quickly become one-sided.
Ronnie Nathanielsz of Yahoo Philippines Sports expects exactly that:
If Pacquiao does avoid the upset bid to pick up his third straight win, the focus will rapidly shift toward his next fight.
As has usually been the case over the past handful of years, the buzz is once again starting to pick up surrounding a potential mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather. While it's always sounded good on paper, getting the sides to agree is another story.
That apparently hasn't changed. Dan Rafael of ESPN provided the outlook of famed trainer Freddie Roach, who works with Pac-Man, and he isn't optimistic:
As for now, both fighters are devoting all of their attention to Saturday's clash. It's a potential turning point for each of them. That's especially true for Algieri as he seeks the biggest win of his career by a pretty wide margin.
Pacquiao should definitely push for the knockout if he gets to opportunity. It would be his first since knocking off Miguel Cotto in 2009 and would back up his comments about the return of his power. Of course, just getting the win is the most important thing, though.
A much clearer outlook for both fighters should emerge after the bout.
