LSU Football: 2015 Recruits Tigers Must Land

Carter BryantNov 19, 2014

LSU needs help.

Head coach Les Miles has watched his team flounder over the past couple of weeks. The Tigers were shut out with ease by Arkansas after losing a close heartbreaker to Alabama. LSU fans have a right to be concerned for the future.

Miles will look for some reinforcements on the recruiting trail. The Tigers' 15 commits in the 2015 class has them ranked 15th nationally, which is only good enough for the eighth in the SEC. But there is still plenty of room to grow.

Predicting what teenagers will do is an inexact science. The Tigers would take a step back if any of their current commits were to renounce their pledge. Miles will be hopeful if they all keep their word and sign with LSU.

But that is out of the control of Miles and his staff. All they can do is recruit prospects that are currently uncommitted or committed to other schools. Here are four players the Tigers could desperately use for a return to the SEC Championship Game.

Daylon Mack, DT

1 of 4

Daylon Mack is a 5-star difference-maker at defensive tackle. Mack is currently committed to Texas A&M, but the Tigers are not giving up on him.

LSU defensive line coach Brick Haley has not slowed down in his pursuit of Mack, per Shea Dixon of Geaux247.com. Mack made an official visit to Baton Rouge when the Tigers squared off against Alabama. He walked away impressed:

"

LSU visit went great!! Had a blast!! #GeauxTigers I'll be back!!

— THEE MACK TRUCK (@DaylonMack) November 10, 2014"

Davon Godchaux and Christian LaCouture have been the only consistent performers at defensive tackle this season. Mack would immediately provide some much-needed depth at a position that Haley wishes he could rotate more during the course of the game.

Tyron Johnson, WR

Louisiana's crop of 2014 recruits was magnificent. The class featured four 5-star and 12 4-star players.

The 2015 bunch is not too bad either, as the class features 14 4-star talents. The lone 5-star in the group is New Orleans' Tyron Johnson

Johnson, a rangy receiver with amazing ball skills and elusiveness, has been pursued heavily by LSU. Other schools in the chase for his services include Texas Tech, Auburn and Clemson. Johnson told ESPN's Gerry Hamilton earlier this month that Auburn is his top choice, but 247Sports' Crystal Ball Prediction heavily favors the Bayou Bengals.

LSU brought in four receivers in its 2014 class. Malachi Dupre and Trey Quinn have already contributed as true freshmen. Johnson has the talent to be as good as either one of them, if not better. His presence alone would make offensive coordinator Cam Cameron's playbook even wider.

Donte Jackson, ATH

3 of 4

Donte Jackson is the most electrifying prospect in Louisiana. Jackson is a 4-star athlete out of Riverdale High School in New Orleans that has a flare for the spectacular.

Jackson projects as cornerback, but he can easily serve as a slot receiver and situational running back. He also has the skill set to be a dangerous returner on both kickoffs and punts. His fabulous career was rewarded with an invite to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

“It’s a huge honor,” said Jackson, per Sonny Shipp of Geaux247.com. “I feel like I deserved this honor and it’s a real prestigious event to be a part of. Some of the best in the league (NFL) played in this game and to be part of that history is really special.”

The leader for Jackson's services is Georgia, per the 247Sports' Crystal Ball Prediction. LSU is loaded with young cornerbacks and already has 2015 commitments from Xavier Lewis and Kevin Toliver II.

Immediate playing time for the Bulldogs seems more likely for Jackson, but he certainly has the potential to be the best cornerback in the 2015 class.

Adonis Thomas, LB

4 of 4

Adonis Thomas is the 11th-ranked outside linebacker prospect in the country. Thomas, though, has the potential to be a top-five linebacker in the 2015 class.

The Tigers are hopeful to reel in higher-rated prospects such as Malik Jefferson or Jeffery Holland, but Thomas would not be a bad consolation prize. He has amazing range and athleticism that would fit in well with defensive coordinator John Chavis' scheme.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball Prediction gives LSU no shot of landing Thomas, but that will not stop Chavis from recruiting him. The Tigers could use some extra playmakers in their linebacking corps.

LSU will likely lose its most productive linebacker, Kwon Alexander, to the NFL draft this offseason. Kendell Beckwith, Duke Riley, Lamar Louis, Debo Jones and Clifton Garrett are more than capable of filling in Alexander's production. Nevertheless, Thomas would immediately compete for playing time.
