Pacquiao vs. Algieri: Weigh-in Info, Fight Schedule and Rematch Projections

R. Cory SmithNov 18, 2014

Seven months after avenging his loss to Timothy Bradley with an impressive victory, Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) will look to knock off another undefeated boxer in Chris Algieri (20-0-0, 8 KOs).

A lot is on the line for both fighters heading into the match. Pacquiao is still looking to prove he's one of the best fighters in the world despite his losses in 2012. Algieri, on the other hand, has aspirations of proving he's a worthy adversary and deserves big fights in the future.

Before the two fighters step into the ring, here's a look at the fight schedule, weigh-in information and possibilities of a rematch.

Rematch Projections

Pacquiao is riding a two-fight winning streak after a rough stretch against Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez. However, Algieri comes in with an unblemished record and recent victory over Ruslan Provodnikov at the Barclays Center.

But let's be honest, Pac-Man isn't Provodnikov. Pacquiao is much more aggressive and can change the outcome of a fight quickly. Despite not having a knockout win since 2009, the Filipino fighter still has plenty of power.

Even with his recent wins, Pac-Man isn't going to overlook the undefeated Algieri. Pacquiao spoke about his upcoming opponent, per Santos A. Perez of the Miami Herald.

“We are not taking him lightly for this fight, and we are training hard for this fight because of what he proved in the Ruslan fight,” Pacquiao said. “Chris Algieri is a very dangerous fighter, and we are taking nothing for granted.”

Pacquiao is the overwhelming favorite for the fight, but Algieri offers an interesting foe. At 5'10", Algieri towers over his 5'6.5" opponent and has already overcame doubters against Provodnikov.

Algieri offers speed and punching accuracy that might give him a fighting chance against Pacquiao. Even with his record, Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, has taken several verbal jabs at Algieri, via Mark La Monica of Newsday:

"

He's a cocky kid. He's in over his head with Pacquiao. That master's degree in nutrition is not gonna help him.

If he has any guts at all and wants to fight us a little bit and he's going for the world title, I think we'll knock him out.

I don't care how many protein shakes he drinks a day, Manny is gonna kick his [butt].

"

Though he hasn't defeated anyone of Pacquiao's caliber, Algieri still has the skill to contend in the ring with him. But to put it simply, Pacquiao likely isn't interested in a rematch with the New York native.

Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter, spoke about a potential rematch, per Jake Donovan of Boxing Scene.

"As far as if Chris Algieri wins the fight against Manny Pacquiao, there is a provision in the contract for a rematch," Arum said. "If he beats Manny in a rematch, and Floyd wants to fight (Algieri), that’s none of my business. That’s up to (Algieri’s) promoter—Joe DeGuardia—and the Mayweather camp to discuss."

Of course, the fight most fans are pining for is a match with Floyd Mayweather Jr., something Pacquiao has addressed multiple times. Pac-Man told Dan Rafael of ESPN.com, "I want that fight," and he said Money is avoiding the fight, via Gareth A. Davies of The Telegraph

Even with the boxing world waiting, both sides have never come to an agreement.

If Algieri does find a way to defeat Pacquiao, a rematch might be in the works. But the 35-year-old has already referenced a fight with Amir Khan in London, per Davies. That fight may not be a given if he doesn't take care of Algieri.

The New York fighter may no doubt be looking for a chance to prove himself again after Saturday, but Pac-Man will likely be moving forward. All of that, of course, hinges on who wins the bout in China.
