B/R Superstar Rant: RAW's Guest Hosts and The WWE's Pop Culture Impact!

Joe Burgett Jul 29, 2009

It seems as if the WWE hit both a gem and mud when they came up with this novel concept of bringing in a new guest host every week for Monday Night RAW. It started out with the use of WWE Legends and one current superstar.

Now it looks like we will see a Celebrity of some sort every single week, which I am personally happy with. Will it help RAW get ratings? I am not too sure.

Since the beginning of the RAW Guest Host concept being instituted, the ratings have basically stayed the same. There was a small rise, but not enough to say this is going to make the WWE be the top Television Program on TV.

They have been between a 4.0 to 5.0 and that is the usual rating for RAW. If you have seen the ratings since Celebrities have been in wrestling, they have not added a lot to ratings what so ever.

History shows that the rating, if it moves up, only goes to a .4 or .5, which is nothing huge at all. While people will take the rating, they don't have to go out and spend the money to get the celebrity on a show when they really won't add to it.

Donald Trump was probably the most successful celebrity to be on a wrestling show, as he supposedly added 2.6 more to the rating, which resulted in RAW getting one of its most successful shows in years with a 6.8

However, it should be noted that the WWE did have a storyline set up where Trump bought RAW, which turned out to be bigger than the WWE thought it would be. Some of the WWE's idiot stock holders thought Trump really bought RAW and panicked.

The USA Network sent out a press release stating that Vince McMahon sold RAW to Trump, which was where it all started. These business men should first off watch the show and know a little about the WWE before going crazy.

You should know about the freakin product you bought into. It is obvious you cannot buy RAW without buying the WWE, which Vince McMahon would rather die than sell. While the WWE made a big deal out of it, it was nothing to be worried over, and Wall Street should realize that.

But enough about that, back to RAW's guest hosts.

We should realize this has been a minor success, and the WWE is not paying anyone that much to come on the show, if they are paying them at all. In fact, celebrities are asking to be on.

Celebs want to promote movies, music, TV shows, etc. Being on RAW with millions of people watching is one great way to promote. Also, you get more exposure on RAW than you would on any talk show.

The usual time a celeb spends as a guest on a talk show is around 10 to 20 minutes on camera, which of course depends on the show and how many guests are on.

Being on RAW gives you at least 1 hour total on camera, and you do segments off and on all through the night, so you'll be seen at some point in the 2 hours and 5 minutes of the show.

It is one of the best places to promote something, and the WWE puts the spotlight on you the whole time. It is the perfect set up for the celebrity while helping RAW get more and more involved in pop culture.

The recent RAW host, Shaq, probably got the most exposure of anyone. Being on WWE RAW and being a sports figure can do that. Shaq is probably the most famous athlete in the world, so he is internationally known.

All sports shows are going to cover what he does, which means it gives RAW more exposure. It is a good plan if the WWE plans to do it long term if you ask me.

I feel that the WWE and other promotions bring in celebs and don't know why it is not helping them out. The reason is that they are only coming on every once in a while. If you have celebrities on every single week, people will want to watch every week.

They will want to see who the host is and/or see how they will do. The WWE is another thing that people will be interested in, even if the people watching are not normally a wrestling fan.

The viewers will want to know what the WWE has planned for the celeb. If they are in a match, what the wrestlers say or what the celebs say, etc. The WWE realizes that the best way to get themselves out there is to get into pop culture more and more.

If you ask the average person on the street about wrestling, they most likely will not say anything regarding TNA or ROH. It is not that these promotions are bad, it is because that the WWE knows that you have to do more than wrestle to get your company out there.

It is saying something when your company is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a particular topic. When you think of computers, it used to be that you thought of Bill Gates.

Gates didn't invent the computer, like the WWE didn't invent wrestling. However, Gates added to what a computer could do with his software which made the computer one of the things the entire world basically "had to have".

You may think Apple or MAC when you think of computers now, however the Microsoft Brand still has the most success out of just about any company in the world. Which is why Gates is one of the richest people in the world today.

The WWE has done the same, while they did not invent pro-wrestling, they added so much to it and they are the most successful promotion in the world despite the fact that other promotions have better wrestlers.

RAW having a guest host every week from the pop culture world only adds to their success. Whoever thinks it is a bad idea to have them on the show knows nothing regarding business.

While we may not like what the guest hosts do, and their acting may not be all that great (ZZ Top), the fact that they have so much success outside of the wrestling world means they have fans.

They will follow the person they are a fan of, which is why the WWE will continue to be the top promotion in the world today.

This also may be one way the WWE fans will see something they have wanted to see for some time, The Rock!

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is a former pro-wrestler, probably the most memorable wrestler of all time. The WWE fans will not shut up about seeing Rocky back, and until he does make another appearance, this will have to be what we hear.

Johnson is an actor now, and a very good one at that. It is obvious he will want to promote a movie at some time, and the perfect place to get the most exposure is the WWE.

Think of it, the press release says the Rock Returns to RAW!

The WWE's ratings would go through the roof, older fans would come back, new fans would want to see what happens, and regular people who like Rock from his acting days will want to tune in to see what happens.

Johnson would probably have more exposure here than he would on any talk show, and more people may be watching too. If he makes a surprise appearance, I'm not too sure the ratings will go up.

But, if people know he is coming, the ratings will go up, and Johnson will benefit just as much out of it. He doesn't have to wrestle; fans just want to see him back. He just has to talk which we all know is not difficult for him.

Johnson should do this, both for the WWE fans and for his own benefit. There is no reason not to now, its not as if he is going back into wrestling after this. Fans need to realize that.

I am saying is now, I feel before this RAW Guest Host gimmick is over Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be a Guest Host.

Not only that, but there are many more celebs out there who are interested. So, be ready for some interesting TV for the next few months. Heck, it may even go longer than that.
