Brock Lesnar-John Cena III Should Have Been Survivor Series' Main Event

Sebastian MaldonadoNov 14, 2014

Survivor Series is upon us!

One of the WWE’s biggest events of the year will arrive November 23 and is primed to be a hit. In fact, the WWE is offering it as a free event as part of their WWE Network’s service. The network is streaming free content for the entire month of November.

The card is shaping up to be monumental. The big one-on-one match features two exciting young guns in Dean Ambrose and Bray Wyatt. They square off for the first time to settle their differences.

The main event will be a slobber-knocker with huge consequences. The Authority has assembled a team to do battle against John Cena and his allies. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon have put together Seth Rollins, Kane, Mark Henry and United States champion Rusev. John Cena is bringing intercontinental champion Dolph Ziggler, Big Show and Sheamus. Both sides each need one more member to complete their teams.

If Cena’s team wins, The Authority will be removed from their position of powers. Cena’s squad needs to eliminate all members to make this scenario a reality.

Meanwhile, the WWE title…is not up for grabs. The champion, Brock Lesnar, isn’t even wrestling on the card.

That’s a head-scratcher, especially with the fallout from Hell In A Cell.

Cena defeated Randy Orton to earn the right to face Lesnar again. Plus, Cena’s second match with Lesnar at Night of Champions ended with a false finish. Rollins interfered, causing Lesnar to be disqualified. Where is Round 3?

Bottom line: Lesnar-Cena should have been the main event at this year’s Survivor Series.

Granted, I appreciate the WWE making the traditional Elimination tag match significant again. It hasn’t been relevant for a long time, arguably since 2005. It was SmackDown vs. Raw with Batista, Rey Mysterio, JBL, Bobby Lashley and Randy Orton representing SmackDown. They defeated Raw’s team of Shawn Michaels, Kane, Big Show, Carlito and Chris Masters.

However, the WWE title has a strong presence at Survivor Series. It started well before 1997’s Montreal Screwjob, where Bret Hart lost the title to Michaels thanks to Vince McMahon. That night also ended with Hart spitting in McMahon’s face and resulted in Hart not appearing on WWE programming for nine years.

In 1991, The Undertaker became champion over Hulk Hogan, his first title after only two years in the company. Hart ended Diesel’s yearlong reign as champion in 1995.

Lesnar also has history at Survivor Series. He lost the title to Big Show in 2002 thanks to his current advocate, Paul Heyman. Show also ended Lesnar’s undefeated streak on the same night.

Lesnar also lost the following year in a Survivor Series tag match. His team featured Big Show, Nathan Jones, Matt Morgan and A-Train (Tensai). They lost to the team of Kurt Angle, Hardcore Holly, Bradshaw (JBL), the late Chris Benoit and John Cena.

This brings us to Cena. The most recognizable WWE Superstar will be spotlighted in a tag match. Wouldn’t it have been better if he had his last shot at Lesnar at one of the most prestigious events of the year?

Maybe the WWE is saving Lesnar since he’s on a limited schedule. Maybe Lesnar didn’t want to wrestle, which is his right, even though it’s cheating fans out of what they crave.

Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena should have been the main event for this year’s Survivor Series. The WWE title is just as important at this event as the traditional tag match.

Frankly, WWE dropped the ball with this card.
