Report: WWE Telling Creative Team to Come Up with New Ideas for Rey Mysterio
While things may be strained between Rey Mysterio and WWE right now, it appears the company is still eager to get the wrestler on board as it heads into WrestleMania 31.
As Dave Meltzer notes in this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), Mysterio met with Triple H and Vince McMahon backstage recently in order to come to some sort of agreement on their issues. Meltzer mentions that while nothing definite was decided, WWE is optimistic about Mysterio being a featured performer in the future—with the writers even being told to come up with fresh, new ideas for him:
"At least from the WWE standpoint, the belief is that he’ll be back shortly and working fairly regularly between now and WrestleMania. His contract expires in late April. The only thing we’ve heard is that they’ve asked him to do more dates than most think is prudent for him. I don’t know if that’s just not learning, since he will break down on a nearly full schedule. But the belief is they’ll reach a compromise. Creative has been told to come up with some ideas for him.

Obviously, it would be advantageous for WWE to convince Mysterio to return.
He's still a very popular performer, and the bookers are running short on babyfaces with Roman Reigns, Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan all out of action. Despite his fragile physical state—it's easy to lose count of just how many knee surgeries he's had—he can still usually churn out decent in-ring performances too. One last bout at WrestleMania 31 would make a nice swansong, assuming that's where WWE wants to go.

However, it would be unwise to try and get him to do more dates than absolutely necessary. At this stage in his career, he shouldn't be working anything close to a full-time schedule. His body probably can't handle it. House shows, and maybe even non-important TV matches, may be out of the question.
Ultimately, though, it's up to Mysterio. No doubt if the star does want out of his contract, he'd like to remain professional and part with WWE on good terms. (Just storming out like CM Punk did would probably be too much legal hassle.)
But, really, McMahon and Triple H should only be asking him to work a handful of matches at most. Anything else might be asking too much from the ailing star.
