Power Ranking the 10 Best MMA Fights to Watch on November 15

Nathan McCarterNov 12, 2014

November 15 will be packed with MMA action, and quality MMA action at that. Three of the top MMA promotions in the world will run cards on Saturday with 36 fights in total.

UFC 180 hits Mexico City for an 11-fight card. The action starts on UFC Fight Pass (subscription required) and moves to Fox Sports 1 to cap off the preliminary action. Then the main card kicks off on pay-per-view, headlined by an interim heavyweight title tilt between Fabricio Werdum and Mark Hunt.

Bellator 131 will see all of its prelims on Spike.com before airing the main card live and free on Spike TV. The main card features King Mo Lawal, Melvin Manhoef, a lightweight title bout and Tito Ortiz vs. Stephan Bonnar.

Not to be forgotten, WSOF 15 brings a four-fight main card to NBC Sports Network with two title defenses.

Fans will have options on Saturday to watch high-quality MMA content. From free TV to PPV, there is plenty of choose from, and plenty to schedule your DVR to record. Bleacher Report will have you completely covered from top to bottom this weekend, but first we break down the 10 best fights from all three cards.

Let's take a look at the power rankings for Saturday's action.

No. 10: WSOF Strawweight Championship: Jessica Aguilar vs. Kalindra Faria

1 of 10

Starting the power rankings will be a title match for the WSOF strawweight strap.

Jessica Aguilar (18-4) takes on Kalindra Faria (15-3) in the second fight of the main card on NBC Sports Network.

Aguilar is considered one of the best, if not the best, strawweight fighters on the planet. This will be a big test for Faria. Aguilar is on a nine-fight win streak with victories over Lisa Ellis, Megumi Fujii and Carla Esparza. She is a well-rounded fighter who can control her bouts.

The relatively unknown Faria is on an 11-fight win streak, but her level of competition isn't comparable to Aguilar's. Her biggest win came over Carina Damm in 2013. This will be a chance for her to audition for bigger and better fights.

This fight makes the list because it has one of the best women fighters going in Aguilar and a title on the line. It may not be the most competitive bout of the evening, but it will give a glimpse at a potential UFC title challenger in Aguilar.

No. 9: Ricardo Lamas vs. Dennis Bermudez

2 of 10

Ricardo Lamas (14-3) and Dennis Bermudez (14-3) meet in a pivotal featherweight matchup at UFC 180.

Lamas is a former title challenger who wants another crack at Jose Aldo, and Bermudez is seeking his eighth consecutive win in an effort to push him into that same slot.

This is one of the most high-level fights of the evening.

It comes in only at No. 9 because of the way these two fight. They are wrestlers primarily, and sometimes their grappling battles can leave more to be desired from their skill sets. However, this scrap has the potential to be a Fight of the Night.

This quality fight will have major significance to the 145-pound division.

No. 8: Melvin Manhoef vs. Joe Schilling

3 of 10

I am not expecting this fight to be competitive, and I doubt many fans hope it will be.

This fight checks in at No. 8 for only one reason, and that is Melvin Manhoef (29-11-1, 1 no-contest). The potential for the high level of violence he brings into the cage makes him a must-watch attraction in MMA.

Joe Schilling (1-3) is a lamb being led to slaughter, and it's easy to tell that is what Bellator is doing. He only has four professional fights to his credit, and three are losses. He will be stuck in the cage with a talented striker who always has bad intentions.

If Schilling was an accomplished wrestler, maybe this fight wouldn't make the list, but knowing what level of fighter he is raises everyone's eyebrows to the mayhem Manhoef will likely create.

And that is the only reason this fight is on the list.

No. 7: WSOF Middleweight Championship: David Branch vs. Yushin Okami

4 of 10

Yushin Okami (30-8) is a former UFC title challenger and one of the better middleweights going today. He challenges for David Branch's (14-3) WSOF middleweight gold in the WSOF 15 main event.

Branch went 2-2 in his UFC stint, but since leaving the promotion, he has gotten a chance to hone his skills. He is 6-1 since leaving the UFC with his only loss coming by decision to Anthony Johnson in a 195-pound catchweight bout. He is 4-0 in the WSOF.

The only issue with this fight is Okami's grinding style. It is not the most crowd-pleasing.

Branch is a credible middleweight who has improved, and Okami is still a top 185-pound fighter. That type of high-level action should move it higher on this list, but the fighting style prevents it from doing so.

This fight should get your attention—but perhaps on DVR after you've taken in some of the other bouts on Saturday. That way, if it does become a mind-numbing grind with little action, you can hit the fast-forward button.

No. 6: Jake Ellenberger vs. Kelvin Gastelum

5 of 10

Kelvin Gastelum (9-0) shocked almost everyone with his The Ultimate Fighter victory over Uriah Hall. He has looked even more impressive since. At UFC 180, he gets the chance to move into title contention.

Jake Ellenberger (29-8) awaits him.

This fight has the potential to be a stalemate, but their propensity for throwing down elevates the matchup. Ellenberger is on a two-fight losing streak, and with his back against the wall, he will be looking for an impressive win.

Their heavy hands, love for a scrap and potential for good technical grappling make this one of the best fights on Saturday.

In the official UFC rankings, Ellenberger comes in at No. 7, and Gastelum is ranked at No. 11. The winner will make an all-important move up the ladder to get a big fight in 2015.

No. 5: Tito Ortiz vs. Stephan Bonnar

6 of 10

Tito Ortiz (17-11-1) vs. Stephan Bonnar (15-8) leads off the second half of this list for two reasons: name value and promotion.

When Bonnar got in the cage with Justin McCully earlier this year, it was one of the most hilarious and embarrassing moments yet in MMA fight promotion. The unmasking event was high comedy, but high comedy that worked to generate buzz in this fight.

Both fighters are well past their prime, but at the end of the day, they are still Tito Ortiz and Stephan Bonnar.

Bonnar has been one of the more exciting fighters in the cage. He comes forward and looks for an ugly fight. Ortiz, at this stage in his career, may be more than willing to oblige.

This is a sideshow-type of fight, but one we can live with. And one we will be excited to watch.

Especially if McCully comes out with Bonnar in another mask.

No. 4: Jessica Eye vs. Leslie Smith

7 of 10

On part of the Fox Sports 1 preliminary card, you will be treated to what could be the scrap of the night.

Jessica Eye (10-2, 1 NC) vs. Leslie Smith (7-5-1) is one of the best stylistic and even-matched bouts on any of the cards.

These two love to strike, love to exchange and bring it for all three rounds. That is a recipe for a fight that will get everyone on their feet. Smith may have an edge in grappling, but Eye brings in a strength and power advantage to her credit.

Eye is ranked as the No. 6 women's bantamweight in the UFC rankings, and Smith comes in at No. 13. Eye can move back into a contender's spot with a win. Smith will look to take her thunder.

Manhoef made this list because of the potential for one-sided violence. Eye vs. Smith comes in much higher because of its potential for competitive violence. This one could get ugly in the best way possible, and we should thank UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby for that.

Mexico City is in for a treat.

No. 3: WSOF Lightweight Championship: Justin Gaethje vs. Melvin Guillard

8 of 10

WSOF's four-card main act has three of those fights on this list. It's capped off by the lightweight title bout between Melvin Guillard (32-13-2, 2 NC) and champion Justin Gaethje (12-0).

This has all the ingredients to be a stellar fight.

When Guillard is one point, he is one of the most dangerous lightweights in the world. He is incredibly fast and has heavy hands and quality wrestling. If he can overcome the mental mistakes, he could regain his spot as one of the best lightweights in the world.

Gaethje returns to action after having the unfortunate duty of exposing Nick Newell in brutal fashion. The 25-year-old isn't talked about nearly enough as being an elite lightweight.

Good fighters, high stakes—that is what we value as fans of combat sports.

The co-main event of WSOF 15 should deliver one of the best fights on Saturday.

No. 2: Interim UFC Heavyweight Championship: Fabrício Werdum vs. Mark Hunt

9 of 10

One way or another, the fight between Fabricio Werdum (18-5-1) and Mark Hunt (10-8-1) should not be competitive.

Either Werdum takes him down and easily submits him, or Hunt caps off an incredible comeback story with a knockout to remember. There is not much middle ground.

Normally, that would put this fight lower on the list, but it checks in at No. 2 because of Hunt.

Hunt's story and run toward a title shot are so compelling that they make this a must-watch fight. It doesn't hurt that Hunt's style of fighting is fan-friendly. The No. 4-ranked heavyweight in the divisional rankings has made a show of it recently.

This is to take nothing away from the UFC's No. 1-ranked contender in Werdum.

Werdum is ultra-talented and has been exciting to watch in recent fights. His story is just not to the level of Hunt's, and that's not a bad thing. Hunt is just the underdog story that fans love to root for, even though the Brazilian is an incredibly cheerful and likable person.

The fight may not last too long and may not be all that competitive. It comes in so highly ranked because it is a can't-miss event and story to watch unfold. The action in the cage only plays a supporting role.

No. 1: Bellator Lightweight Championship: Will Brooks vs. Michael Chandler

10 of 10

While most of the world is captivated by Mark Hunt's run toward a UFC title fight, it is actually Bellator that brings the best fight of the weekend to your television screens—and it's for free!

Bellator 131's co-main event is a lightweight title tilt rematch between Will Brooks (14-1) and Michael Chandler (12-2).

The two met in an interim title bout at Bellator 120 in May, when Brooks came away with a split-decision win. Champion Eddie Alvarez left for the UFC, and now the two will meet to determine the undisputed Bellator lightweight champion.

Their first fight was fantastic, and the rematch should be just as good.

Chandler and Brooks are two of the best lightweights in the world. Period. This is an elite matchup for a championship. A rarity outside of the UFC. That alone should have you excited. And the fact you can see it for free on Spike should only heighten the excitement.

It is a shame this fight is buried underneath the nonsense of Ortiz vs. Bonnar, but it will still happen in a five-round affair, which we can be thankful for. No matter what your schedule is on Saturday, make sure to put this on the list.

Brooks vs. Chandler is the premier matchup of the weekend. Hunt vs. Werdum may garner the most press, while Ortiz vs. Bonnar may headline Bellator 131, but Brooks vs. Chandler is the can't-miss fight this Saturday night.
