Miami Football: 2015 Recruits Hurricanes Must Land
The Miami Hurricanes are heating up on the football field, and they'll look to continue that success on the recruiting trail.
Currently, Al Golden and his coaching staff have assembled 247Sports' third-best group in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 15th-best nationally.
Whether a particular athlete fits the system, occupies a position of need or is flat-out talented, a handful of high-school stars stand out as must-land players for the 'Canes.
Since recruiting is an ever-changing, volatile landscape, committed prospects—both to Miami and other programs—are included.
Shawn Burgess-Becker, Athlete
1 of 5Status: Committed to Alabama
Schools Chasing: Miami, Florida State, Texas
Though Shawn Burgess-Becker can play wide receiver and safety, he's typically considered a better defensive prospect.
Per Nate Adelson of 247Sports (subscription required), Burgess-Becker said the Miami staff was targeting him as a D-back but has since changed its tune: "They started out recruiting me at safety but now they said I can play wherever. I don’t even care if I'm there or at receiver, as long as I can get on the field."
Regardless, Burgess-Becker would add legitimate depth to whichever Hurricanes unit he joined.
Devonaire Clarington, Tight End
2 of 5Status: Uncommitted
Biggest Competition: Alabama, Texas, LSU, Florida
Clive Walford graduates following the season, so the 'Canes will be thin at tight end with just Standish Dobard, Chris Herndon and Jake O'Donnell.
Four-star tight end Devonaire Clarington is capable of filling that void.
Standing 6'5.5" and 222 pounds, Clarington would immediately provide the Hurricanes with a red-zone presence. He has superb catching ability, which coupled together with his stature allows him to snag passes at heights smaller defenders cannot reach.
Clarington must improve his blocking at the line of scrimmage, but his frame certainly allows for weight gain. Of course, if Clarington doesn't, Miami can utilize him as a receiver—where he basically plays right now anyway—or defensive end.
Marcus Lewis, Defensive Back
3 of 5Status: Uncommitted
Biggest Competition: Michigan, Florida, Oregon, Georgia, Ole Miss, Kentucky
If Miami eventually lands Marcus Lewis, the commitment would likely be the steal of the Hurricanes' recruiting season.
Fortunately for Golden and Co., they possess the final opportunity to impress the highly touted recruit, barring any change. Per Ryan Bartow of 247Sports, Lewis scheduled an official visit to Miami on Jan. 30, the final weekend before national signing day.
Lewis is a cornerback but may translate better at safety. And considering his tackling ability, he'd form a superb tandem with a ball hawk from South Florida.
Jaquan Johnson, Safety
4 of 5Status: Committed to Miami
Holding Off: Florida
Regarded as a top priority in the 2015 class, local Killian High School product Jaquan Johnson committed to Miami in mid-August.
Johnson isn't quite an elite, immediate-starter prospect, but the 4-star should contribute immediately in some fashion. He's often found in the proper positions because of outstanding awareness, and being in the right spot is a trait not to be discounted.
While Johnson definitely must improve at finishing tackles, his ball skills and play recognition make him an appealing talent.
Kiy Hester's transfer to Rutgers makes Johnson's pledge even more valuable, since Miami must replace Dallas Crawford and Nantambu-Akil Fentress, too. No, the latter two aren't top-flight safeties by any stretch, but the 'Canes will only have four safeties next year.
Jordan Scarlett, Running Back
5 of 5Status: Committed to Miami
Holding Off: Florida State, Ohio State, Wisconsin
Currently ranked the nation's No. 7 running back, Jordan Scarlett may continue to rise up the list. Through nine games, he's recorded 7.5 yards per carry and 15 touchdowns.
Scarlett recently reaffirmed his commitment to "The U," via Christopher Stock of 247Sports (subscription required): "I committed [to Miami] for a reason and I've heard plenty of rumors that I'm leaving to FSU and stuff like that so I had to let everyone know that's not the case."
Holding on to the commitments of Dexter Williams and Mark Walton is undoubtedly important, too. But Scarlett leads the elite trio, and that's quite an accomplishment.
