How WWE Can Increase Fan Excitement for Team Cena vs. Team Authority

Sharon GlencrossNov 5, 2014

It’s hard to fight the feeling that the current Survivor Series main event—which will see John Cena head a group of wrestlers to go against The Authority on November 23—hasn’t just been thrown out there by a desperate booking team who can’t think of anything else to do for the St. Louis show.

The (apparent) absence of Brock Lesnar weighs heavily on the show. Cena’s issues with The Authority also seem rather forced—basically, the match came about after Stephanie McMahon made a weak and laughably transparent attempt to convince him to join the corporate group.

The added stipulation that Triple H and McMahon will be removed from power if their team loses also comes off as rather rushed and tacked-on at the last minute.

McMahon and Triple H have been running the show well over a year, and now suddenly they’re going to be totally gone after one minor "B" main event? What? You’d think something like that would have at least been saved for WrestleMania.

Cena has thus far recruited Dolph Ziggler to his crew. Ziggler is a hugely talented wrestler, but his career has never truly recovered from his botched run with the World Heavyweight Championship in early 2013. Kane and Seth Rollins are two confirmed members of Team Authority, to the surprise of no one.

On paper, it doesn’t feel like that big of a deal, and it’s difficult to see it doing a decent number on pay-per-view or boosting the profile of the WWE Network.

However, having announced the match, WWE must now stick with it, and, thankfully, there are certain steps the bookers can take to add intrigue and excitement.

Adding Dean Ambrose to Team Cena is a good idea. Despite being the victim of some rather terrible booking over the past couple of weeks, Ambrose is still fairly popular with the crowds and would make a good addition to Cena’s crew.

There would also be the compelling question of whether the unhinged Ambrose would truly be willing to be a team player for the sake of getting his hands on Rollins again.

Randy Orton was seemingly written off television on Monday’s Raw when he was badly beaten by The Authority and taken out of the ring on a stretcher.

One idea would be for Cena to leave one spot on his team open, tease a “mystery member” on television and then have Orton come out at the event, shocking everyone and receiving a massive ovation from his hometown crowd.

As for Team Authority? Well, WWE writers have some interesting options in that area too. Bray Wyatt is a potential member—and his inclusion would also work well if Ambrose is indeed going to be on Team Cena. If Ambrose and Wyatt were to finally get their hands on each other, it would probably serve to enhance the bout’s appeal.

No doubt seeing the pampered corporate executives flying down to Wyatt’s remote, scary cabin in the woods to try to recruit him would be an amusing segment for television too.

Another tantalizing option is to add Triple H to the bout.

Considering Triple H rarely wrestles anymore, this would surely add some novelty and intrigue to the match. Besides, if The Authority’s power truly is at stake here, it wouldn’t make sense for him to sit this one out. He simply has to be in the ring, fighting alongside the other heels.

It’s not difficult for WWE to make the Survivor Series bout much more appealing to fans. Just throw in Ambrose and Triple H, as well as bring back Orton.

Ideally, the bookers should also stick to their word and take the McMahons off television if they do lose. The last thing you need right now is fans losing yet more faith in stipulations.
