Randy Orton Underlines His Importance to WWE Again with Recent Turn

Aaron BowerNov 5, 2014

When the annals of time fall on Randy Orton's career with the WWE, it's highly likely that he will be forever remembered for the amount of world titles he claimed throughout his time with the company.

It's possible that he'll eclipse the 16 won by Ric Flair, a feat which will no doubt sit uncomfortably with some wrestling fans, who believe nobody should win more titles than Flair has.

While that may or may not be fair, what often gets overlooked with Randy Orton is how versatile and talented he is as a performer.

He's endured a fair few turns throughout his career with differing degrees of success across the board.

With his recent transition back to being a babyface—or, at worst, a "tweener"—we're seeing the very best of The Viper in a WWE ring once again.

In fact, Orton has just about established himself as the WWE's most important talent all over again. More valuable than John Cena, and certainly of more worth than the other main event stars in the company.

That may sound churlish to some, but Orton is an asset like nothing else the WWE possess.

Whilst there is always a call for the WWE's main event scene to be flooded with new, emerging talent, Orton seems to be one of the main constants throughout plenty of change. He can adapt to a wide range of storylines and pull off feuds and rivalries with seemingly anyone.

We're seeing that with the development of his feud with Seth Rollins, which exploded with perhaps one of the most well-written angles in the recent history of the WWE on Raw.

Orton's blindside on Seth Rollins was beautifully executed, confirming that the WWE are bringing back the Randy Orton that takes no prisoners and can strike at any stage.

The funny thing is, Orton's attack on Rollins didn't make the latter look weak whatsoever. The focus was on Orton, and how he had once again become so predatory.

Fast-forward an hour or so, and Raw was closing with Orton being decimated by The Authority after turning his back on them by attacking Triple H. That was a great move from the WWE, but yet again, all the attention and spotlight was on Orton.

He sold the beating incredibly well.

Orton has a unique ability to sell like few others can on the current roster. In that sense, he's on par with someone like Dolph Ziggler, which is another thing that makes him so invaluable to the WWE—and makes him so talented.

He's now been written off TV to go away and shoot a movie, but the most exciting thing about Randy Orton is that you just never know what is coming next.

Will he return before, during or after Survivor Series? Who will his first target be—Triple H, Kane or Seth Rollins?

Could it even be Stephanie? We've seen that particular subplot unfold on numerous occasions before, and it seemed to bring the best out of Orton in terms of his sadistic, unhinged persona, and it looks like making a comeback.

With the levels of unpredictability and genuine intrigue he brings to a storyline, Randy Orton is now once again cemented as the WWE's most important star.

It could have been quite easy to forget all of that during the latter months of his allegiance with The Authority. However, when he returns to WWE TV at some point in the next few weeks, be ready for a ferocious Orton to entertain everyone in supreme fashion.
