Chelsea Transfer News: Latest Major Rumours Surrounding Jose Mourinho's Squad
Chelsea's efforts to build a squad capable of challenging for major European honours will continue this January, when Jose Mourinho will again strive to inject yet more quality into his ranks.
The club's summer investment has thus far proven to be effective, but with the club progressing across all campaigns, the Blues won't be looking to take their foot off the gas now.
This week's latest speculation sees Chelsea both boosted and disappointed in certain transfer prospects, Mourinho's winter options gradually coming into shape as we edge closer to January.

Adrien Rabiot

Adrien Rabiot will not be moving to Stamford Bridge this winter after penning a new deal in the French capital that would see him remain with Paris Saint-Germain until 2019.
The reigning Ligue 1 champions revealed the extension via their official Twitter account, confirming a dramatic turnaround of events for a player who seemed destined for the Parc des Princes exit:
Chisanga Malata of the Daily Star provides quotes from the midfielder upon signing his new contract:
"I am very happy to remain a player of Paris Saint-Germain, the club that made me the player I am today. I would like to thank the president who kept discussions open in recent months and the sporting management for his support. It was here at Paris Saint Germain that I grew up and enjoyed my first experiences as a player.
The club's project is ambitious and I'm very proud to be a part of it for the coming years. Now I want to concentrate on my football, on my game and give my best for Paris Saint-Germain on the pitch and for the supporters.
"
Chelsea are mentioned as one of those sides who may have hoped to sign Rabiot on a free contract next summer, when his previous deal was set to expire, or launch a cut-price January bid.
For now, they'll have to settle on the central partnership of Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic, which is by no means doing their silverware chances any harm this term.
Andre Gomes

Another youngster who remains in the club's sights, however, is Benfica's playmaking talent, Andre Gomes, currently on loan with Valencia.
The Daily Star reports that Chelsea will go head to head with Manchester United in a race to sign the 21-year-old, although next summer would be the earliest possible juncture at which they'd be able to do so.

Valencia owner Peter Lim is believed to own part of the Portuguese international's economic rights, and the Daily Star report mentions that Valencia are attempting to sign their midfielder on permanent terms.
Gomes has made eight La Liga appearances this season, all as part of Los Che's starting XI, scoring two goals in the process, per Transfermarkt.
A rounded asset not too dissimilar from the Fabregas mould, Gomes can play in a box-to-box capacity but is more valued for his creative assets, and he would be considered a long-term project with great potential in the Blues' ranks.
Gerard Pique

Speculation over Gerard Pique's Barcelona future has intensified further after Luis Enrique chose to drop the centre-back from his matchday squad for Saturday's 1-0 defeat at home to Celta Vigo, says Jack Wilson of the Daily Star.
The additions of Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen have created more competition among the Blaugrana defence this season.
However, Spain manager Vicente del Bosque is quoted by BarcaStuff in alleging there's more to Pique's current status, which has seen his Camp Nou prominence drop of late:
"Del Bosque (coach ESP): "I don't agree that Pique is not doing well. There's more to the current criticism than just football." [ddlr]

As Wilson states in his report, Pique recently had a run-in with traffic police relating to an off-field incident, and Bleacher Report UK tells of the Spaniard's recent indiscipline, in which he was caught using his phone on the Barca bench:
With David Luiz departing over the summer and John Terry's time at the club gradually drawing to a close, Chelsea may be assessing their long-term centre-back options.
Former Real Madrid boss Mourinho would appear to be a fan of Pique, but these recent issues both on and off the pitch may not be seen as particularly alluring traits in the defender's behaviour.
