WWE Programming's Best Match for Week of November 1

Brad JonesNov 1, 2014

While Hell in a Cell was undoubtedly this week's standout event, WWE television as a whole continued its streak of strong matches across the board.

With the WWE Network free to new subscribers for the month of November, more eyes will be on broadcasts of secondary shows like Main Event and Superstars—and it might just show them something that they're not seeing on Monday Night Raw.

For all the negative hype ahead of the match, John Cena and Randy Orton put on a very serviceable Hell in a Cell match. It would be difficult to call it an all-time classic, but it was a solid effort that bolstered the pay-per-view card and is worth a watch.

Cesaro vs. Dolph Ziggler from the same event wasn't quite the definitive 2-out-of-3 Falls match that many were expecting, but still had its charms. It should really have been about twice as long, but what we did see was very good.

The main event of this week's Monday Night Raw saw Seth Rollins meet John Cena, and despite its obvious finish it was an excellent TV match for its duration. Rollins first started to make himself known in singles matches against Cena, and its performances like the one he gave on Monday that have elevated him to his current spot on the card.

Elsewhere, Superstars boasted an excellent match in its main event when Tyson Kidd battled Sin Cara. Sin Cara has more of an upside than many give him credit for, but the real story here is Tyson Kidd. The often underappreciated Canadian is doing the best work of his career at the moment — anyone who's not yet sold on Kidd, watch this match.

Match of the Week for November 1: Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins inside Hell in a Cell at Hell in a Cell 2014

While a great match will shine even if its the curtain-jerker on secondary television broadcast, seeing a match that deserves to main event a pay-per-view is always satisfying. All too often the best match of the night is relegated to the undercard while a limp main event closes out the show on a sour note—but that wasn't the case last Sunday.

Ambrose and Rollins delivered everything a main event should be. As soon as the Lunatic Fringe began his long march down to the ring, there was a palpable excitement that spread from the arena to many a fan sitting watching at home.

What followed was nothing less than a barnburner, and no matter what you think of how the match ended, it's difficult to argue that it wasn't a spectacle.

Back at Extreme Rules earlier this year, we saw Daniel Bryan face Kane in an Extreme Rules match that called to mind the worst of the Attitude Era. This match called to mind its dizzy heights; stipulations that enhanced a bout rather than detract from it, a sense of sheer spectacle and interweaving feuds between a host of fresh engaging talent.

Both men came out with a point to prove last Sunday, and by the time all was said and done, few could argue that they hadn't done just that.

The new generation of Superstars rising through the ranks of WWE are ready to be given the spotlight in the main event; and based on Cena and Orton's match earlier in the night, the veterans know that they're under pressure to deliver the goods.

Ambrose vs. Rollins will go down as one of the great Hell in a Cell matches, and coming off the back of frequent disappointments inside the structure in recent years, that's no mean feat. These two have got a bright future ahead of them in WWE; it'll be very interesting to see where they're at when their paths cross next.
