8 Most Important College Football Recruiting Visits of Week 10

Tyler DonohueOct 30, 2014

A memorable Halloween weekend is in store for several of America's top college football prospects. Coveted recruits from across the country are set to spend upcoming days on campuses they could potentially call home during the next chapter of their lives.

From Oregon to Ole Miss, anticipation is mounting for these meaningful visits. We continue our weekly preview of players on the move and teams attempting to land them.

Oregon: 5-Star DE Keisean Lucier-South (Orange, California)

1 of 8

247Sports’ Composite Ranking: No. 23 overall, No. 2 among weak-side defensive ends

High School Success

The Orange Lutheran High School standout spends his Friday nights terrorizing quarterbacks and continues to progress as a complete defender. Keisean Lucier-South, a versatile 6'5", 225-pound prospect, has also spent time at outside linebacker, where teams like Michigan would prefer to use him.

Through eight games as a senior, Lucier-South has demonstrated significant improvement as an all-around edge-rusher. He already set a career high with 45 tackles, including seven for loss, after collecting 38 in 2013, per MaxPreps.

Lucier-South's 17 sacks since last September provide evidence of his impact on opposing passers.

Recruitment Update

He remains open to several schools in multiple conferences. Lucier-South previously spent official visits at Michigan and Oklahoma, while nearby UCLA and USC are strong contenders.

The Trojans, in particular, have picked thing up in this pursuit during a recent stretch.

“It blew me away when Coach (Steve Sarkisian) showed up to my game, and it showed me how much they actually care about me," he told me earlier this month. "USC is definitely a team I’m looking at closely."

Pac-12 rival Oregon is also firmly in the mix. This is a trip Lucier-South has been anticipating since he locked in plans.

“I love a lot of things about Oregon—the facilities, the school, the coaching staff," Lucier-South said. "It’s a visit I've been excited about for a long time. There are a lot of things I’ll be looking at while I’m there. It’s another opportunity to consider things before I make a decision.”

UCLA: 5-Star WR Christian Kirk (Scottsdale, Arizona)

2 of 8

247Sports’ Composite Ranking: No. 29 overall, No. 5 among wide receivers

High School Success

Few 2015 prospects can flaunt the track record Christian Kirk boasts. The 5'10", 191-pound playmaker is a remarkably productive offensive weapon with a winning pedigree.

He led Saguaro High School to a state title in 2013 and has spearheaded the squad to a 9-0 record this season. Kirk tops the team in rushing and receiving, racking up 1,498 yards and 25 touchdowns, per MaxPreps.

Though he may occasionally be utilized out of the backfield in college, Kirk is viewed as a top-flight receiver first and foremost. Dating back to 2012, his efforts include 146 receptions for 2,929 yards and 42 scores.

Recruitment Update

This trip to UCLA gives 5-star quarterback Josh Rosen an opportunity to play the role of salesman. The nation's top-ranked passer provided an early foundation for head coach Jim Mora's 2015 class when he committed this spring and is also spending the weekend on campus for his official visit.

Rosen spoke highly of Kirk in July when both 5-star recruits competed at The Opening, an elite invite-only football showcase held at Nike's world headquarters.

"Christian has the ability to break any play at any time as long as the ball touches his hands," he told me. "It would be awesome if UCLA can bring him in. I think a guy like Christian would complement the group of receivers they already have and become a big weapon in the slot and downfield."

Kirk is also considering Texas A&M, Ohio State, Auburn and Arizona State, where he is set to visit next weekend.

Mississippi State: 4-Star DB Xavier Lewis (Reserve, Louisiana)

3 of 8

247Sports’ Composite Ranking: No. 146 overall, No. 19 among cornerbacks

High School Success

Xavier Lewis, a star at East St. John High School, can fill multiple roles in the defensive secondary. The U.S. Army All-American Bowl selection is among the most dynamic athletes in Louisiana and contributes to his team in several capacities.

He takes snaps at quarterback, doing damage with his arm and legs on a regular basis. Lewis is an exceptional coverage defender who is capable of stepping up to stop rushing efforts.

His prowess as a special teams weapon has also been on display, as he has multiple punt-return touchdowns.

Recruitment Update

Lewis committed to LSU while attending The Opening, where he received coaching instructions from former Tigers star Tyrann Mathieu. However, the in-state standout isn't satisfied to sit back and wait for national signing day.

He's remains active on the recruiting trail, as this visit to an SEC rival represents. Lewis, who has also shown interest in Texas Tech, is expected to spend an official visit at Arkansas in November.

West Virginia: 4-Star DB Tyree Kinnel (Dayton, Ohio)

4 of 8

247Sports’ Composite Ranking: No. 178 overall, No. 10 among safeties

High School Success

Tyree Kinnel rose to prominence as one of Ohio's top prospects in 2012, recording 55 tackles and two interceptions during his sophomore season. The 6'0", 205-pound speedster is a long-striding defender who excels in downfield man coverage.

He has the physical stature to challenge receivers off the snap and continues to flash progression as a punishing run defender. Kinnel, who could play cornerback or safety in college, knows how to deliver the kind of devastating, yet clean, hits that can ignite a defensive unit.

His efforts have helped Wayne High School remain unbeaten through nine games this season.

Recruitment Update

Kinnel committed to Michigan prior to his junior season, becoming a key building block for head coach Brady Hoke's 2015 class. However, the situation has quickly eroded in Ann Arbor.

Struggles could cost Hoke his job after this season, and rampant uncertainty is really hurting recruiting efforts. Michigan has suffered several disheartening decommitments, and Kinnel is at least exploring other avenues should things change with the Wolverines.

His offer list also includes Kentucky, Notre Dame and Michigan State.

Arizona State: 4-Star WR Cordell Broadus (Las Vegas, Nevada)

5 of 8

247Sports’ Composite Ranking:  No. 133 overall, No. 14 among wide receivers

High School Success

Cordell Broadus has spent his entire high school career in the limelight. That's what happens when you're a descendant of hip-hop royalty.

The son of Snoop Dogg has done a solid job of creating his own reputation as a receiver. The 6'2", 195-pound playmaker caught 98 passes during the past two seasons at Diamond Bar High School in California but transferred to Las Vegas powerhouse Bishop Gorman High School for his senior season.

Broadus has quickly acclimated to the new environment and is among the leaders on America's top-ranked team. He has 26 receptions for 428 yards and seven touchdowns through nine games, per MaxPreps.

Recruitment Update

It shouldn't come as a surprise that USC is a top contender considering Snoop Dogg is among the Trojans' most iconic fans. A long list of Pac-12 pursuers also features UCLA, Arizona and Arizona State, where he'll spend time this weekend.

His top options beyond the region include LSU, Baylor and Notre Dame. The Under Armour All-America Game selection hasn't provided any indication that he plans to decide on a destination in the near future.

Texas A&M: 4-Star DB Marvell Tell (Encino, California)

6 of 8

247Sports’ Composite Ranking: No. 58 overall, No. 4 among safeties

High School Success

Marvell Tell, a rangy defensive back from Crespi High School, has been a productive player since his underclassman years. The 6'2", 175-pound prospect picked up 52 tackles and an interception as a sophomore, per Scout.com.

He doubled his interception total in 2013, adding 41 tackles. Tell also adds a dimension on offense as a receiver.

He caught 15 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns as a junior.

Recruitment Update

Tell is another talented West Coast standout who is seemingly caught in a tug-of-war between several Pac-12 teams. His suitors in the conference include Oregon, USC and UCLA.

Texas A&M has managed to draw his interest to the Lone Star State, while another SEC squad also stands out as a possibility. Tell traveled to Vanderbilt in September for an official visit.

Oregon: 4-Star DE Canton Kaumatule (Honolulu, Hawaii)

7 of 8

247Sports’ Composite Ranking: No. 53 overall, No. 4 among strong-side defensive ends

High School Success

Teenage football players don't come more physically intimidating than Canton Kaumatule. The 6'7", 290-pound Punahou High School lineman overmatches opponents at the high school level and manages to move with a level of agility that often eludes young prospects of this stature.

He is recognized as one of the top overall players in a state that continues to command increased respect for its ability to produce top-tier college football prospects. Kaumatule is more advanced as a defender at this stage, but given his size and footwork, he could become an intriguing project at offensive tackle.

Recruitment Update

Paired with 5-star California defensive end Keisean Lucier-South, the presence of Canton Kaumatule provides Oregon with a golden opportunity to land program-changing commitments. The massive Hawaiian prospect remains relatively raw but flashes immense promise and rare strength for an athlete his age.

His older brother, Luke, plays at Stanford, another team that has emerged as a potential landing spot. Beyond the Pac-12 rivals, Oklahoma is another program to watch closely here.

Ole Miss: 5-Star 2016 QB Shea Patterson (Shreveport, Louisiana)

8 of 8

247Sports’ Composite Ranking: No. 26 overall in 2016 class, No. 3 among pro-style quarterbacks

High School Success

Shea Patterson has slain defensive secondaries throughout his junior season, completing a career-high 65 percent of pass attempts. He's thrown for 1,500 yards, 25 touchdowns and just one interception through eight games, per MaxPreps.

His progression is apparent, as Patterson continues to build off a strong sophomore effort. He stepped up as a top underclassman in 2012, tossing 34 touchdowns during a 2,600-yard passing campaign.

Recruitment Update

Arizona initially landed a commitment from the Calvary Baptist Academy star, but he backed off that verbal pact in July. Since reopening his process, the coveted quarterback has been busy.

His visits this season include USC, Notre Dame and Oklahoma. Now he'll have a chance to enjoy one of the great atmospheres in college football, traveling to Oxford for Ole Miss' showdown against Auburn.
