European Championship Darts 2014 Results: Daily Scores, Updated Draw, Schedule

Gianni VerschuerenOct 24, 2014

Michael van Gerwen dominated the final day of the 2014 European Championships in Muelheim, Germany, winning his first ever title at the prestigious tournament.

Mighty Mike defeated Dave Chisnall and Raymond van Barneveld on his way to the final, before putting together perhaps his best performance of them all, thrashing Terry Jenkins 11-4. He even landed a nine-darter in the process, which you can see here.

Van Gerwen became the first Ducthman to lift the trophy, and with the 2014 Grand Slam right around the corner, few will bet against the world No. 1 to continue his sensational run.

Recap

Michael van Gerwen put in a dominant performance on Sunday to win his very first European Championship, beating compatriot Raymond van Barneveld in the semi-finals before thrashing Terry Jenkins in the final.

The reigning World Champions and world No. 1 came into Sunday's final rounds having played a solid if unspectacular tournament, but he exploded against Van Barneveld, even recording a nine-darter, via PDC's official Twitter account:

"

"

Barney gave Mighty Mike a good challenge in the opening legs but simply couldn't keep up with the insane pace, as Van Gerwen finished their semi-final match with an average well over 102.

He wrapped things up with a 12-darter, recording a 161 finish to book his spot in the final, where he met The Bullet.

Jenkins qualified first with an 11-8 win over Mervyn King, playing well in the middle legs and taking maximum advantage of several key errors from The King. Jenkins took a two-leg lead in the eighth and quickly ran out to a 9-5 lead, giving him room to work with.

He missed two darts for the match at 10-7 but took out 122 on the bull in the final leg, giving himself the chance to win his first European Championship.

Any hope to do so quickly evaporated against Van Gerwen, however, who charged out to a 5-0 lead, including a phenomenal 167 checkout. Jenkins won three straight only to drop five in a row, and another 11-darter saw the Dutchman win the title.

Van Gerwen told his official website what an honour it was to lift the trophy:

"

It is very special for me because I have never won this trophy before.

To win the World Championship and the European Championship in the same year is a great achievement for me.

I’m playing very well at the moment. A couple of years ago this was all a dream but now it is reality.

I think I can do even better and after this I am confident of going on to win the World Championship again.

"

The Dutch star is in sensational form right now, and he will be eyeing another trophy in next month's Grand Slam.

Oct. 25: Phil Taylor Suffers Shock Upset in Round 2

Saturday's Results

Afternoon Session

Terry Jenkins 10-8 Robert Thornton
Dave Chisnall 10-9 Ian White
Jelle Klaasen 10-7 Jamie Caven
Peter Wright 10-5 Kim Huybrechts

Evening Session

Raymond van Barneveld 10-7 Vincent van der Voort
Phil Taylor 9-10 Stephen Bunting
Michael van Gerwen 10-8 Brendan Dolan
Ronny Huybrechts 7-10 Mervyn King

Recap

The second round started with two incredibly close matches, as Terry Jenkins defeated Robert Thornton before Dave Chisnall nearly suffered an upset, needing a decider to get past Ian White.

The Bull fired in a phenomenal 121 bulls-eye finish to move ahead 3-2 and never trailed again, managing a respectable 95.83 average and finishing with confidence.

Chizzy didn't have it as easy, falling behind 2-0 early before a three-leg run put the experienced Chisnall back up. White took control of the checkouts in the middle legs and played himself into a 9-7 lead, giving himself three chances to win the match.

The 34-year-old from St. Helens kicked into gear, however, not giving his opponent a single match dart to tie things up at nine all. Chizzy continued his run in the decider, opening with two 180's and taking out 82 for the win.

He conceded he had a slow start when he spoke with event organisers PDC after the match, as reported on their official website:

"

I'm delighted to be through. I started off a bit slowly and Ian started off very well, but I was losing legs on my throw and then nicking legs on his throw - it was a funny game.
After I got it back to five-all I managed to get on a bit of a roll and I dug in and started to hold my throw a bit better.
In the last leg, Ian started with a 58 and I just wanted to punish him with the 180, and then another one came and I told myself not to miss my doubles when I got a shot, so fortunately I didn't.

"

Jelle Klaasen hit an incredible 10 180's to beat Jamie Caven 10-7, while Peter Wright had an easy afternoon against Belgium's Kim Huybrechts, winning 10-5.

All eyes were on the top seeds taking part in the evening session, and the German fans wouldn't go home disappointed. After Raymond van Barneveld defeated compatriot Vincent van der Voort 10-7 in the first match, four-time champion Phil Taylor was eliminated by Stephen Bunting in perhaps the match of the year.

Even the PDC couldn't believe what they had just witnessed when it was all said and done:

WHAT A GAME! Both players averaging 100+, 16 180s and one dart away from a nine-darter! Follow all the action at: http://t.co/JlorgARNbs

— PDC (@OfficialPDC) October 25, 2014

Both players averaged well north of 102, and eventual winner Bunting came within one miss on double 12 of a sensational nine-darter.

The opening 10 legs in particular were astonishing, featuring 13 180's as The Power locked horns with his much younger opponent. The Bullet had a chance to win it leading 9-8, but missed on double seven to allow Taylor to steal the leg in 12 darts.

Opening with just 58, Bunting's efforts seemed to have been for naught, but the 29-year-old rebounded with his 10th 180 before taking out 68 to record a historic victory.

Michael van Gerwen nearly suffered a similar fate, falling behind Brendan Dolan early. The Dutch world No.1 pulled out his finest darts in the final legs and was aided by several key misses from Dolan in the 17th leg, before taking out double 10 and finishing the match in the next leg.

Mighty Mike will be the big favourite moving forward following the elimination of Taylor, with the chance to finally win his first ever European Championship.

Michael van Gerwen 6-3 Justin Pipe
Phil Taylor 6-2 Steve Beaton
Simon Whitlock 4-6 Raymond van Barneveld

Recap

The first round started off with a bang on Friday, as Wes Newton continued his poor 2014 season by losing 6-1 to Ian White. The Warrior averaged a subpar 85.74 and a horrendous 16.67 checkout percentage, missing crucial darts on double eight in the fifth leg to seal his fate.

Mervyn King nearly suffered an upset loss to Christian Kist, needing some help in the deciding leg after falling behind 5-3 due to some sloppy play.

Debutant Kist ran out to a 3-0 lead before The King shifted gear and won three consecutive legs, but Kist retaliated with a strong finish in leg seven and King missed a checkout on the bull to give his 28-year-old opponent three chances to miss the match.

King forced a decider with two excellent legs but fell behind in the 13th, giving Kist multiple darts to complete the upset. The Dutchman couldn't hold his nerves, however, allowing King to take the match by finishing tops.

Kim Huybrechts' 6-5 win over Dean Winstanley had an eerily similar conclusion, as Over The Top ironically missed tops with a chance to win the match, allowing the Belgian to check out with a cool double-eight finish.

The top players on the Order of Merit took to the stage in the evening session, which immediately produced the biggest shock of the first round, as World Champion Adrian Lewis was eliminated by Jelle Klaasen.

Jackpot played a solid match but ran into an unleashed Klaasen, who is trying to save his 2014 season in Germany. The former BDO World Champion averaged an impressive 92.07 and remained calm on the checkout, as the crowd went wild when the defending world champion was sent packing.

Michael van Gerwen had no such difficulties against Justin Pipe, winning 6-3. The favourite for this year's title has never won the European Championship, but after a dominant performance in the Grand Prix, he should feel good about his chances to change that.

Four-time champion Phil Taylor started his campaign on a strong note, beating Steve Beaton 6-2. The Power didn't have a slow start on the finish, gifting two legs to his opponent, but he made the difference in open play and took full advantage of Beaton's countless mistakes.

Taylor shone some light on his retirement plans ahead of the start of the tournament, as he told Sky Sports he plans on slowing down starting next season:

"

Obviously my years are coming to an end now and I’m on the latter end.

I can’t keep going and years are getting closer and closer. I’m going to give it another two or three years but I’m going to be slowing down next year – I’m not running up and down like I used to.

"

Raymond van Barneveld produced a minor upset in Friday's final match, eliminating Simon Whitlock after a close and exciting match. Whitlock has struggled for consistency all season, and against Barney, it once again showed with several bad misses on the checkout.

The 2014 European Championships will resume on Saturday with the second round, before the tournament reaches its conclusion on Sunday.
