The Internet Is Not Killing Pro Wrestling, It's Saving It!

Joe Burgett Jul 24, 2009
Does anyone know what their using to read this article right now? It could be a laptop or desktop computer, but in some way, shape, or form you are reading this article online on the world wide web.'
This WWW, in the basic form that we know it now, really started back in 1990, which means I was a 1-year-old baby at that time.
WOW, how time passes.

Anyway, throughout time we saw the World Wide Web improve. We saw our computers get better, and even saw software that could do things we never thought could be done. Then, we saw a revolution, one that would change our lives forever.
It’s basically what I am doing now. It is called blogging. While many of us call it writing for the web, it can be classified either way; the two terms are synonymous.
We saw sites come up, like this one, which allowed us to express our opinions. Also, many began to use the Internet for news. One type of news many wanted to know was wrestling news.
We saw tons of websites up that only concentrated on just wrestling news. Sure, the people who wrote it were considered slimeballs by wrestling management. I mean, you would say the same thing if people gave away secrets of yours, right?
However, there are many articles up—heck I recently saw one—about how the Internet killed pro wrestling.
Think of this, if the Internet killed wrestling, then why are we writing here? All of us, including myself, are going to read those articles and still go out and watch wrestling.
Many of you will look at wrestling websites for the latest dirt, and so on. And last time I checked, we are seeing more wrestling promotions pop up than ever before. So really, how is the Internet killing wrestling?
What people should say is that possibly insiders are killing wrestling. However, you don't have to read SPOILERS. You don't have to read news on who will be in this storyline, etc.
So really, the Internet is not killing wrestling.
In my opinion, the Internet is actually helping it.
While the news sites have someone slated for a possible storyline angle, the promotion could change it up all together and make a new storyline that people would enjoy more.
Also, we are seeing opinions from fans!
Wrestling promotions can see what the fans are thinking. If the fans like something, then that promotion can keep it going; if not, then they have the option to kill it off.
Promotions such as the WWE will tell you to your face that they are not reading anything online. They'll claim they couldn't care less about what is being said.
They are completely lying. I know it, you know it, and the whole world knows it.
They read the stuff just as much as you are reading it now, sometimes even more!
By listening to the fans, they can know what people like. If they don't think someone is doing well, the promotion will take it under advisement. If say, a performer continues to be poor, then that wrestler will be gone.
Sometimes, it seems there are blindfolds in front of the eyes of management to what fans are saying. This ultimately costs the promotion dearly.
Take the WWE's Great Khali and Vladimir Kozlov, for instance.
Both were heavily pushed because Vince McMahon liked them. Not many others were into the two men. However, because the man in charge liked them, they were involved in storylines and main events.
Khali was even once World Heavyweight Champion!
People didn't hate these two because they were heels for some time; they hated them because they were terrible to watch. Boring, if you will.
Management can only say so much; the fans have to speak out. Management is worried about job security. Fans couldn’t care less, which is why they let the WWE and others have it.
The best place to do that, and the easiest, is online.
Some people will see this and agree, others may not. But it is all a matter of opinion.
McMahon and others see what we are writing, and they realize the blunders they make. McMahon would never in a million years say he was wrong for something, but apparently he knows when he is wrong.
That’s why Khali is not main eventing any longer, and why Kozlov is on the C-Brand Show in ECW.
They also see the good things they are doing with certain stars. This is how people such as Kofi Kingston and CM Punk got pushes so fast and why they are winning so many titles so very quickly.
In fact, Punk was the fastest Triple Crown winner in WWE history. The former fastest was Kevin Nash.
Punk is once again World Heavyweight Champion, and that is thanks to the fans for being on his side. The WWE and McMahon can be high on someone, but if the fans are not into any given superstar, eventually that love will subside with management.
The Internet is a powerful tool, and many use it because of what it can do.
Not even TV reaches as many people as the Internet. In fact, TV has to come to the Internet to get more outreach. You may see WWE, TNA, or ROH on TV. But, were do you think it goes after the show? That’s right, the Internet!

So, to all of you people who seem to think wrestling is dying because of the Internet, I say cool your jets, dudes and dudettes. The Internet is actually helping wrestling, and it will continue to do so.
