Jamaal Charles Becomes Kansas City Chiefs' All-Time Rushing Leader

Farzin VousoughianOct 19, 2014

Within two games, Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles went from third to first for most rushing yards in franchise history. He hit the record books against the San Diego Chargers during the second quarter in style. He scored on an incredible 16-yard touchdown run to earn the record.

Charles passed Larry Johnson two weeks ago against the San Francisco 49ers and reached the 6,000-yard rushing mark of his career. Coming off a bye, Charles needed just 53 yards to pass Priest Holmes, who ran for 6,070 yards as a Chief in 65 games.

The most impressive part about Charles’ feat is that he earned the title with fewer than 1,100 attempts, while Holmes and Johnson both ran the ball at least 1,300 times.

Alongside being the team’s all-time rushing leader, Charles owns several other franchise records, including most rushing yards in a game.

He gashed through the Denver Broncos for 256 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Week 17 of the 2009 season. Late last season, he passed Holmes, Johnson, Bert Coan, Derrick Blaylock and Frank Jackson for most touchdowns in a game by a Chiefs player when he scored five times against the Oakland Raiders, which also ties for second in NFL history with 10 other players.

Charles' journey to this point is pretty impressive, considering all he has had to overcome since being drafted by the Chiefs in 2008.

Despite suffering a torn ACL injury in 2011, Charles came back strong in 2012 and was efficient when he ran for 1,509 yards and five touchdowns.

In 2013, Charles’ first year under Andy Reid’s guidance, he led the league in scoring among all non-kickers with 19 total touchdowns. Charles was also the AFC rushing leader that season with 1,287 yards.

Due to lack of production on the field and problems off the field, the Chiefs cut Johnson midway through the 2009 season and named Charles the starter in his second year in the NFL. The former Texas Longhorn has been voted to three Pro Bowls and has earned two first-team All-Pro honors.
