Ranking Top Trade Packages and Landing Spots for Miami Heat Guard Tyler Herro

Greg SwartzJun 5, 2026

The future of Tyler Herro and the Miami Heat is very much in question.

The 26-year-old former All-Star and Sixth Man of the Year is entering the final season of his contract. The two sides failed to come to an extension agreement last fall but will be able to negotiate again the day after the NBA Finals ends. Miami can extend Herro for up to four years and $207 million per ESPN's Bobby Marks.

Teams who need offensive help should call on Herro. He's a talented shooter from all areas of the court, a solid playmaker and does a good job taking care of the ball (1.9 turnovers a game last season). He's not a good defender, however, meaning any team trading for him will need a strong defensive infrastructure already in place.

Based on his strengths/weaknesses and which teams need Herro the most, these are his five best trade package ideas and landing spots if the Heat decide to make a change.

5. Dallas Mavericks

1 of 5
Dallas Mavericks v Miami Heat

Dallas Mavericks Receive: G Tyler Herro, PG Kasparas Jakučionis, 2026 second-round pick (No. 41 overall)

Miami Heat Receive: PG Kyrie Irving

If the Mavs want a guard who's closer to Cooper Flagg's timeline, swapping out the 34-year-old Irving for the 26-year-old Herro (and 20-year-old Jakučionis) would make sense.

Dallas desperately needs help at guard and with their three-point attack. The Mavs ranked 29th overall in made threes per game (11.0) and were 26th in accuracy (34.4 percent). Herro is a lifetime 38.2 percent shooter from deep on 2.7 makes per game. Klay Thompson was the only Mavericks to best Herro last season (2.9 per contest).

Jakučionis was Miami's 20th overall pick in the 2025 draft. A 6'5" guard who can also shoot (42.3 percent from three as a rookie), Jakučionis gives the Mavs some much much-needed young talent around Flagg.

Adding Herro and Jakučionis to the mix allows Flagg to play more in the pick-and-roll and not have to handle the ball as much.

For a Miami team stuck in purgatory, Irving raises the team's ceiling when paired with Bam Adebayo and makes the Heat a more attractive landing spot for a player like LeBron James in a sign-and-trade.

4. Orlando Magic

2 of 5
Orlando Magic v Miami Heat

Orlando Magic Receive: G Tyler Herro

Miami Heat Receive: G Jalen Suggs, C Goga Bitadze

Despite giving up the farm for Desmond Bane last offseason, the Magic still finished 18th overall in offense this season (114.2 rating). Orlando had the second-worst scoring attack of any of the 16 playoff teams, trailing only the Portland Trail Blazers.

Clearly, more work is needed.

As good as Suggs is defensively, he's registered a negative offensive swing rating in three of his five pro seasons, not ideal for a starting point guard. With career shooting marks of 42.3 percent overall and 33.1 percent from three, Suggs isn't helping to elevate a struggling Orlando offense the way Herro can.

Plugging Herro into the Magic backcourt alongside Desmond Bane would help improve the team's outside shooting, playmaking and put more pressure on opposing defenses overall.

For Miami, a backcourt of Suggs and Davion Mitchell would be the best defensive duo in the NBA. For all of Suggs' offensive struggles, the Magic allowed 9.2 fewer points per 100 possessions with him on the floor (97th percentile, via Cleaning the Glass).

Suggs' contract dips each season, meaning his five-year, $150.5 million deal will only average $28.9 million over the next four years. If the Heat have hesitations about giving Herro a big extension, Suggs is on a team-friendly deal moving into the prime of his career. Bitadze is a solid backup center who can mix and match alongside Bam Adebayo and Kel'el Ware.

3. Houston Rockets

3 of 5
Miami Heat v Houston Rockets

Houston Rockets Receive: G Tyler Herro, 2026 second-round pick (No. 41 overall)

Miami Heat Receive: F Jabari Smith Jr., C Clint Capela

Losing Fred VanVleet to a torn ACL right before the season really hurt the Rockets' guard play. Now 32, coming off a major injury and having shot just 37.8 percent overall the year before, Houston should still be looking for a backcourt upgrade even over a healthy VanVleet given the team's title aspirations.

The Rockets have the defensive DNA with Amen Thompson and others (112.1 defensive rating, No. 6 overall) to cover for Herro's weaknesses, as he can help with their playmaking and outside shooting woes.

Houston ranks 27th overall in assist-to-turnover ratio and was often too predictable on offense with Kevin Durant having to log 36.4 minutes per night at age 37.

A starting five of Herro, Thompson, Durant, Tari Eason (restricted free agent) and Alperen Şengün would be elite on both ends of the ball.

Miami should be intrigued with the idea of adding Smith, the No. 3 overall pick of the 2022 draft who still has All-Star potential. He averaged 15.8 points and 6.9 rebounds in 77 games this year (all starts) and could have an even bigger role with the Heat. Capela gives Miami a good backup center in the rotation behind Bam Adebayo.

2. Detroit Pistons

4 of 5
Detroit Pistons v Miami Heat

Detroit Pistons Receive: G Tyler Herro

Miami Heat Receive: F/C Isaiah Stewart, G/F Caris LeVert, 2027 first-round pick (unprotected), 2027 second-round pick (via Milwaukee Bucks)

Cade Cunningham had the third-highest usage rate of any player in the 2026 playoffs, as he was too often the Pistons' only source of offense when on the floor. This team desperately needs another scoring and playmaking threat if they want to make it past the second round of the playoffs.

Herro can fill this role for the Pistons, another team who's good enough defensively (108.9 rating, No. 2 overall) to absorb him into their system.

Detroit finished No. 28 overall in three-point makes and No. 29 in attempts last season, which isn't surprising with Ausar Thompson and Jalen Duren in the starting lineup. Herro isn't afraid to let it fly, as he's averaged 3.1 makes on 8.0 attempts (38.0 percent) over the last four seasons in Miami.

Herro connected on 41.1 percent of his threes off of passes from Heat point guard Davion Mitchell. He'd likely be even better with Cunningham drawing defensive attention before delivering the ball.

Miami loads up on assets here for a future trade, taking in an unprotected first-round pick from Detroit next summer as well as what should be an early second-rounder from Milwaukee. Stewart, 25, is one of the NBA's best rim protectors and LeVert is a reliable veteran playing on an expiring $14.8 million salary.

1. Minnesota Timberwolves

5 of 5
Minnesota Timberwolves v Miami Heat

Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: G Tyler Herro, 2026 second-round pick (No. 41 overall)

Miami Heat Receive: PF Julius Randle, 2026 first-round pick (No. 28 overall)

Donte DiVincenzo started all 82 games at point guard for the Timberwolves this season. After tearing his Achilles during the first round of the playoffs, however, Minnesota will be forced to find a new option alongside Anthony Edwards.

Herro is an upgrade over DiVincenzo and is three years younger. His scoring and playmaking would help keep the workload reasonable for Edwards, ensuring that the All-Star guard is fresh for the playoffs. Having Jaden McDaniels, Rudy Gobert and Edwards in the starting lineup helps hide Herro's defensive issues, as Minnesota ranked No. 8 overall last year (112.5 rating).

A starting five of Herro, Edwards, McDaniels, Naz Reid and Gobert would be one of the best in the West on both ends of the ball.

Randle, a three-time All-Star, brings some muscle to Miami's frontcourt. He averaged 21.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.1 steals a game for Minnesota in 2025-26 and has a nearly identical salary to Herro's ($33.3 million compared to $33.0 million).

A Heat lineup of Davion Mitchell, Norman Powell (free agent), Andrew Wiggins, Randle and Bam Adebayo should make a return to the playoffs in the East while moving their draft pick up 13 spots this summer.
