Best and Worst of Celebrity Sports Fans Right Now

Nick DimengoOct 14, 2014

It's no surprise that celebrities love sports as much as they do—but that doesn't mean they all know what the hell they're doing when cheering.

Often blessed with great connections and a lot of money to go to games, while I can appreciate their passion, I can't always applaud them whenever the cameras find them there.

While there are some who have proven to be great, not all of them can claim such praise, which is why I'm giving you the best and worst of the celebrity sports fans.

Best: Justin Timberlake

1 of 15

As great of a dancer and singer as Justin Timberlake is, he might actually be an even better sports fan.

After all, Timbo does have a small piece of ownership in his hometown Memphis Grizzlies, meaning he's often sitting front row with the best seat in town to see his team play.

With Jessica Biel as his wife and the fact that he's part owner of his favorite NBA team, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't just a tad jealous of the guy.

Worst: Lil Wayne

2 of 15

Deciding where rapper Lil Wayne falls on the celebrity sports fan food chain was one of the more difficult decisions I had on this piece.

While there's no denying the knowledge he has—even penning a few articles in the past for ESPN and appearing on a few of the network's debate shows—Weezy is arguably one of the biggest bandwagon fans in the sports world.

If you were to ask him, he would probably admit to his "favorite" teams winning a title in every sport in each of the past five years.

Yeah, I'd want to talk sports over a beer with him, but he's a bit of an obnoxious supporter for my liking.

Best: Lady Gaga

3 of 15

I really don't know what to make of this whole Lady Gaga meeting with the San Antonio Spurs and posing with the Larry O'Brien Trophy thing that I read last week.

My gut instinct was to ask the question, "Why?"

But, upon further review, it actually sort of makes a little bit more sense—because Gaga has proven to be quite the sports lover.

Generally leaning toward New York teams to show her support, the pop singer has also shown a keen interest in Manchester United over the years, too.

I'm not sure if she could win a sports trivia game, but it does seem like she enjoys watching the games, so I'll show her some love for it.

Best: Kevin Hart

4 of 15

Standing just 5'4", there's no one who would ever confuse comedian Kevin Hart for actually being a pro athlete, but that doesn't mean he doesn't do his part in trying.

A staple at sporting events and award shows, Hart has hosted the ESPYs and appeared in a few celebrity All-Star Games—winning MVP during the NBA version the past three seasons.

He's a funny guy who likes to chat it up with players anytime he attends a game, with a lot of the athletes even appearing in films with him.

Best: Macklemore

5 of 15

As someone who is currently living in Seattle, I had to give some praise to the beloved son of the Great Northwest.

As much as rapper Macklemore can spit some serious raps on the mic, he might be even better at running off some serious stats about his favorite team, the NFL's Seattle Seahawks.

Not uncommon to see him on the sideline or posting things onto his social media channels to show his support, Macklemore has gotten the same love back from the Hawks, not only performing a few times at games, but also getting the honor of raising the 12th Man flag.

Worst: Katy Perry

6 of 15

For any of you out there who might be questioning why Katy Perry would even be included on this list, look no further than her awkward appearance on ESPN's College GameDay a couple of weeks ago.

Seemingly the biggest Ole Miss Rebels fan on the planet—which was probably news to, well, every Ole Miss fan out there—the singer showed up wearing a furry pink top that was supposed to act as some kind of football-themed shirt, and then she proceeded to throw corn dogs at the camera after choosing the Rebels to win over Alabama.

I'll give her credit for one thing, though, she did pick the right team, as Ole Miss did indeed upset the Crimson Tide.

Best: Matthew McConaughey

7 of 15

An alum of the University of Texas in Austin, Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey isn't shy about giving his Longhorns a lot of his attention.

While he was seen on the sideline celebrating the team's national title back in 2006 with his buddy Lance Armstrong—who's also a huge UT fan—he may have even outdone himself just last week.

That's because McConaughey actually gave the football team an inspiring pep talk at practice, proving that the actor is both passionate and one hell of a motivator.

Best: Maria Menounos

8 of 15

Don't be fooled by her good looks and sweet personality when on camera—TV host Maria Menounos is one fierce sports fan.

OK, make that one insane Boston sports fan.

Hailing from Beantown, Menounos is never shy in showing her love, often seen screaming her lungs out during Celtics and Red Sox games.

How deep does her passion run? Enough to get booted from a game during the NBA Finals by fellow celeb fan Jack Nicholson.

Worst: Drake

9 of 15

As a graduate of the University of Kentucky, I have to admit that it's pretty cool to have Drake hanging around the men's hoops team so much, often showing his love for the Wildcats.

Still, most sports fans are well aware of why the rapper gets mentioned as being one of the worst celeb sports fans around: because he's about as bandwagon as they come.

While he has great ties to his hometown Toronto Raptors—who even did a Drake theme night last season—he isn't shy in sporting jerseys from other teams in all sports, making him pretty obnoxious and unlikely to be taken seriously as a sports fan.

Best: Will Ferrell

10 of 15

Without a doubt, actor Will Ferrell might just be the coolest celebrity sports fan out there, and he's arguably the funniest.

A regular at NBA games, Ferrell's real love is for the Southern Cal football team, showing up at nearly every home game in full Trojan garb, acting like a dad of one of the players by yelling and cheering.

As a good friend of current Seattle Seahawks—and former USC head coach—Pete Carroll, it wasn't uncommon for the actor to pull a few pranks to help loosen the mood at practices, proving he can show up on any given day.

Worst: Rihanna

11 of 15

Much like a few of the aforementioned celebrities on this list, Rihanna hurts herself by never finding a team she hasn't loved.

Whether it was the Miami Heat a couple of years ago or the Brooklyn Nets last year, the sexy singer is often seen going nuts for different teams, jumping from one to another as if they were her ex-boyfriends.

I'd think she's pretty knowledgeable on the games, considering she goes to a lot of them, but she needs to stick with just one team for each sport.

Best: Snoop Dogg

12 of 15

While rapper Snoop Dogg can be criticized for being one of the biggest bandwagon fans out there, I have to give him a little more respect for not only coaching pee-wee football, but also starting his own league a while back.

Sure, he likes to claim Southern Cal football, the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers as his own, causing some confusion, but Snoop is about as diehard as they come, so he gets credit for that.

He's making a huge impact on kids, so that's pretty cool to see, too.

Best: Spike Lee

13 of 15

I've shown you a lot of bandwagon celebrity sports fans here, but one famous person who has never been criticized for being such a thing is Spike Lee.

As the most famous New York Knicks fan on the planet, Lee has been sitting courtside at Madison Square Garden for decades, notorious for arguing with refs and talking smack with opposing players.

His "rivalry" with former Indiana Pacers guard Reggie Miller is one of the best in sports history—especially between a fan and player—and is just another way in which the filmmaker shows his love for the Knicks.

Worst: Justin Bieber

14 of 15

There aren't too many people who like a lot of the things Justin Bieber does, but one of the worst is when the singer shows up and cheers for your favorite team.

Known for sitting as close to the action as possible, The Biebs isn't a stranger to hanging out with teams and players following the games, either, even causing a stir when doing that.

Never shy with wearing every single team's colors, it seems, Bieber seems like that friend all of us has who claims to know everything there is about a team, but can't name the current head coach.

Best: Jack Nicholson

15 of 15

There's no arguing this one—Jack Nicholson is the best.

A regular at L.A. Lakers games for over 30 years, there's just no one who's quite like Jack when supporting their favorite team.

Often seen literally being a part of the game, Nicholson hams it up with refs and opposing players, using his wit and coolness to try to take them off their game.

And, at times, it works wonders, as he proved by getting the aforementioned Maria Menounos kicked out of an NBA Finals game in 2010 between the Lakers and Boston Celtics.

It's clear that Jack does what he wants.
