Day 13’s Biggest Winner: Zhao Qinggang
There have been many athletes who have used the Asian Games as a launching point to an exceptional Olympic career, and that may be the case for Chinese star Zhao Qinggang.
Zhao is a track and field star who excels in the javelin event. As the defending Chinese national champion, he was expected to be a serious contender in the event during the 2014 Asian Games.
What many didn’t expect was for Zhao to beat Japanese javelin thrower Kazuhiro Mizoguchi’s all-time Asian distance record. The record had stood since 1989, but Zhao dominated the competition with a throw of 89.15 meters on his final attempt, according to Jon Mulkeen of IAAF.org:
The previous record was 87.60 meters.
Mulkeen also shared Zhao's historic moment on Twitter:
As China.org.cn reported, Zhao had been struggling before the Chinese National Games, but turned it around: “Zhao, from northeast China's Liaoning Province, failed to enter the final round in the Moscow World Championships with a throw of 77.61m. Three weeks later he won the gold at the Chinese National Games held in his hometown with 83.14m.”
The unlikely success story was one of the best during this year’s Asian Games. With the skill and determination to be great at his event and overcome the adversity he has faced, Zhao has now put himself in a great position for next year’s world championships.
According to BBC Sport, China will be hosting the 2015 IAAF World Athletics Championships.
With Zhao carrying serious momentum and looking to make a splash on the international level before the 2016 Summer Olympics, he will be in the driver’s seat with his home country hosting the world championships.
After finishing in first place in Incheon, South Korea, Zhao is ready to take home the gold in Beijing.
