Mitchell Marsh: World Cricket's Batsman of the Month, September 2014
It's been a relatively quiet month on the cricket front, which has made choosing September's Batsman of the Month quite a tricky prospect.
Yes, the Champions League T20 has been on the go, but that did not start until mid-month.
After some deliberation and much head scratching, Mitchell Marsh seemed the obvious choice for two reasons: firstly, his contribution during the tri-series held in Zimbabwe, and secondly, his ability to hold his nerve in crunch situations.
Marsh's unbeaten 86 against South Africa during the tri-series came off just 51 balls, and he completely obliterated both Dale Steyn and Ryan McLaren. He took 26 runs off nine balls from Steyn and 29 off 10 from McLaren, two of South Africa's best bowlers.
The late charge ultimately helped Australia to a 62-run victory. His complete disdain for bowlers makes him a valuable lower-order player, something exemplified during the Champions League T20.
Against the Dolphins in Mohali, Marsh helped Perth Scorchers to a thrilling win by hitting two sixes off the last two balls of the match. Sure, they were both full tosses, but it does take a special kind of player to be so confident in executing your skills. You can view the video of his exploits by clicking here.
It was an amazing victory which, understandably, had the players very excited.
While many players manage such incredible feats every once in a while, what sets Marsh apart is the fact that he does this kind of thing often.
He followed up that effort against the Dolphins with two low scores, but in the Scorchers' final game, he showed once again that he is one of cricket's brightest rising stars.
Against Lahore Lions on Tuesday, Marsh did it all over again. After limping off the field with an injury during Perth's bowling innings, Marsh stepped out to bat with style.
His side had capitulated to 40-6 and needed a special knock to get over the line. Marsh hit an unbeaten 63 off 38 to seal the deal, despite carrying a niggle.
While the bulk of his runs came in fours, Marsh never undervalued the importance of taking a single. He constantly rotated the strike, trusting his lower-order partner at the other end to stick around.
In total, Marsh ran 15 singles and managed to see off 12 dot balls. His timing was exquisite, his batting maturity something not often seen in players who come from the T20 generation.
But good players wouldn't be good players without a little bit of luck. Early on in his innings, there was a huge shout for leg-before which probably should have been given out, but he was given not out.
After that, he timed his innings to perfection, accelerating towards the end but only once the side was within touching distance.
Marsh is due to make his Australian Test debut in just a few weeks, when the Aussies visit the United Arab Emirates for a tour against Pakistan.
Provided he recovers in time from the niggle he picked up, Marsh has given all cricket fans something to look forward to and has more than earned this month's award of Batsman of the Month.
