Kurt Zouma Debut Proves He Could Be Natural Successor to John Terry at Chelsea
There is a debate to be had about Jose Mourinho's decision to field an experienced line-up against Bolton Wanderers in the Capital One Cup this week when youngsters such as Lewis Baker could have benefited from first-team action.
It was a disappointment to see regulars like Andre Schurrle and Oscar playing a full 90 minutes and Eden Hazard as a late substitute.
That said, the performance of Kurt Zouma was encouraging enough to enthuse the Stamford Bridge crowd.

Zouma's debut has been a long time coming, as he was signed from Saint-Etienne in January but then loaned back to the Ligue 1 side before Jose Mourinho added him to his squad this summer.
After differing fortunes in pre-season, he's spent all his time warming the bench at Chelsea in the opening games of 2014/15 but has now announced his arrival.
A Chelsea win and debut goal: It couldn't have gone any better for Zouma.
Indeed, as much as Mourinho relied on his established stars to secure a victory against Bolton, giving Zouma his debut on such an occasion did come with an element of risk attached to it—however small.
The Championship side are known for their physicality, and assistant manager Steve Holland was eager to stress that point in the post-match press conference, explaining how the Chelsea management had considered that fact in their preparation.

Holland also revealed a thing or two about Zouma's position at Chelsea right now.
"He's a player who has waited patiently for a chance to play," Holland explained to the gathered media.
"He's a player that Jose's looking to play, is quite happy to play. We've talked about him already for games in the Premier League. Although he hasn't started yet, he's in the discussions.
"He's not an inexperienced kid, he's played games in the French league. ... I thought tonight, without being particularly tested, with respect to Bolton, he was immaculate. What he did have to do, he dealt with comfortably."
It's too early to begin comparing Zouma with John Terry—the man he replaced against Bolton—although there are similarities between the two.

Both have made their Chelsea debuts in the League Cup, and the style with which Zouma scored his goal was reminiscent of a time when Terry was one of the Premier League's most feared attacking threats from set pieces.
Zouma charged through the Trotters defence to contest Oscar's corner, causing enough of a threat to give Gary Cahill room to target his header at goal.
After a deflection and Loic Remy's shot-cum-cross, Zouma found himself in the right place to scoop his effort into the net and open his goalscoring account in Chelsea colours.
It was a rather instinctive finish for a defender, yet everything that led to it was about power, strength and determination.
For years we've seen Terry doing the same, sending panic throughout defences to either benefit himself or cause enough damage that a teammate scores.
The captain, leader and legend, as he's known in these parts, has been an impeccable member of the defender's union. Terry's reading of the game has allowed him to overcome a lack of pace, rarely being caught out by more athletic opponents throughout an illustrious career.
Zouma is no slouch in that department, but we saw on Wednesday how he can complement a player such as Cahill.
Terry and Cahill's partnership at Stamford Bridge has flourished in the same way Ricardo Carvalho's did with the Blues captain a decade earlier. Back then it was about Carvalho adding the verve and Terry bringing the substance.

It's no different now.
Against Bolton, we saw something similar when Zouma added the muscle to Cahill's more cultured qualities.
It's something that bodes well for the future, and while one suspects Terry has plenty left in the tank, Chelsea's bruising Frenchman has hinted he is capable of filling the void when the time comes.
Bolton was the start. Now for more testing times to see if Zouma can build on that promise.
