Overview
The Cobras' chances of progressing to the next round are slim to none, so they only have pride to play for when they take on the Barbados Tridents on Friday.
While the Cape side has shown some promise, their death bowling has let them down quite tremendously. In their only game so far, Barbados also put in a good performance with the bat, but also faltered at the death against the Kings XI. They conceded 25 runs off the penultimate over as they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
With both sides having such an apparent flaw, things could get interesting when the two teams meet. Barbados still have an outside chance of progressing to the next round. They will have to win every game from here on and hope that other results go their way. For the Cobras, it’s all about sparing their blushes and kicking into gear for the South African domestic season.
Mohali is a bit more friendly to the pace bowlers, so the likes of Vernon Philander and Charl Langeveldt will be expected to contribute.
Their batsmen will have to step up their game, too, though. Just one top order batsman (Richard Levi) has managed more than 30 runs in the entire competition. Philander and Robin Peterson had a lower order blitz which helped the team in the previous outing, but the usual reliable top order has looked quite flat recently.
With all that in mind, this could end up being a rather low-scoring affair in which the team who holds their nerve triumphs.
Key players
Cobras
Hashim Amla's contribution with the bat has been quite dismal, but it's rare that he has too many consecutive failings. A solid knock from him at the top of the order will be crucial to get the Cobras on the board.
Barbados
Jeevan Mendis was the standout bowler for Barbados in their first match with figures of 4-0-18-2. His ability to pile on the pressure will be invaluable for the West Indian team, especially against a side that's susceptible to it.
