Football League Cup 2014: Updated Results, Fixtures, TV and Live Stream Info

Liverpool's 14-13 penalty shootout win over Middlesbrough grabbed the main headlines after Tuesday night's exciting run of League Cup ties.

Brendan Rodgers' strong line-up couldn't overcome the gutsy Championship side after extra time, and the Reds were pegged back twice in front of a nervous Anfield crowd.

Players such as Raheem Sterling received 120 minutes of game time before Saturday's Merseyside derby in a victory that looked like it would never arrive once the spot-kicks started.

Matches to Watch on Wednesday

Manchester City vs. Sheffield Wednesday

Frank Lampard's late goal rescued Manchester City a draw with Chelsea on Sunday, but Manuel Pellegrini's men remain without a win across four matches in all competitions. Granted, the likes of Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Jose Mourinho's side offer an almighty challenge, but City could find themselves under unwanted pressure if they fail to start quickly against Sheffield Wednesday.

The Championship side have hit a run of form prior to their Etihad visit. Stuart Gray's men are unbeaten in three league matches and have already proved they are capable of upsetting top-flight opposition in this year's tournament.

Atdhe Nuhiu's penalty saw the Owls overcome Burnley in the last round, meaning Wednesday will head to Manchester in the most confident of spirits.

Pellegrini is likely to change his line-up quite considerably. Players such as Willy Caballero, Matija Nastasic and indeed Lampard could all start for the home side. Wednesday will stick to the tried-and-tested formula—led by potent striker Stevie May—ahead of their giant killing attempt.

Tottenham vs. Nottingham Forest

Similar to City, Spurs' recent lack of confidence is made more prominent due to their Championship visitors being in excellent form. Mauricio Pochettino watched his side get beaten by West Brom at the weekend in a White Hart Lane fixture that needs to be quickly wiped from the memory.

Forest are unbeaten across all eight matches in the league this season, having racked up five wins to sit top of the second-tier pile. James Vaughan and Henri Lansbury eased Stuart Pearce's side beyond Huddersfield in the last round of the cup, setting up an encounter with Spurs that is sure to split accumulators across the country.

Pearce's men possess real experience and are looking dominant across the pitch. New signing Michael Mancienne has settled right away since moving from Bundesliga side Hamburg for just £1.5 million, reported by John Percy of The Telegraph. The former Chelsea man was quietly one of the coups of the summer and has impressed Pearce with his instant impact, per the Nottingham Post:

"

I think the crowd have seen, straightaway, how good he is. He has gained the respect of the crowd and of the other players on the training ground, just through what he does on the football pitch. He is not the most vocal of players, or even as a person. But he delivers performances on the football pitch.

Mancienne will be key to halting the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor and Harry Kane. Pochettino's squad remains one of the Premier League's best on pound-for-pound terms, so the Argentinian should be expected to deploy a starting line-up similar to those utilised in the Europa League.

For Forest, Britt Assombalonga already has eight goals in the Championship and is backed up by genuine goalscoring power in Michail Antonio. The likes of Mancienne, Lansbury, Matty Fryatt and Eric Lichaj all have experience at the top level, meaning a second below-par performance in a row from Spurs could spell disaster.

The remaining third-round games will certainly have to go some way to improve upon the upset factor offered 24 hours earlier, but with in-form sides like Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest travelling to Premier League grounds, there's plenty of room to fill Thursday's back pages with heroic results. Best get the kettle on if any match goes to penalties, though.
