Updates from Thursday, Sept. 18

Ajax demolished Paris-Saint Germain 6-1 in the final fixture of Matchday 1, showing the club's senior squad there is no reason to fear the French giants. The Dutch team's Twitter feed shared the final score:

17-year-old Donny van de Beek scored three goals for the hosts, including a breathtaking lob in the 62nd minute to give him his hattrick. Adham El Idrissi also added a brace, with captain Jairo Riedewald putting the final score on the board with a late penalty.

Les Parisiens had no chance against the much more talented Dutch side, although Yohann Demoncy ensured the embarrassment wouldn't be complete by bagging a goal of his own in the 73rd minute.

Ajax and Barcelona are the early favourites to win this year's edition of the UEFA Youth League, and fans could get a preview of the possible final when both teams meet on the 21st of October.

Updates from Wednesday, Sept. 17

Arsenal's youngsters managed what their senior counterparts couldn't during their Group D trip to face Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

The Young Gunners took the lead inside quarter of an hour against their German counterparts after Dan Crowley set up Kaylen Hinds for the opener. Hinds doubled his tally with another strike just after the half an hour mark, providing Arsenal with breathing space heading into the break, per the club's Twitter account:

Dortmund were unable to bring themselves into the match after half-time, quite the opposite to the reverse scoreline posted during Tuesday night's senior result. Arsenal kept control to comfortably take the points, noted by side's social media presence:

Arsenal join Galatasaray on three points, but currently sit one goal behind the Turkish outfit.

Chelsea also opened the competition with a convincing win against German opposition, thrashing Schalke 4-1. Isaiah Brown emerged as the star of the show with an excellent brace, which began after just nine minutes. Maurice Multhaup was fortunate to equalise five minutes later when Ola Aina's clearance bounced off the midfielder and into Chelsea's net.

The Blues didn't allow this to affect their confidence and took the lead before half-time with a close-range finish from Dominic Salanke.

Brown kicked into gear after this, netting his second, before Aina made up for his earlier mishap with an instinctive finish after Brown was cruelly denied the hat-trick, per Chelsea's official Twitter account:

The West London side will be pleased with their performance and ability to exact revenge on the Gelsenkirchen club, per Chelsea's Twitter feed:

Manchester City kicked off their Group E campaign in some style as they travelled to Germany and trounced Bayern Munich 4-1.

Jack Byrne opened the scoring after 26 minutes having created space for himself after good link up play from Thierry Ambrose and Spanish left-back Angelino.

Bayern were then reduced to 10 men as goalkeeper David Hundertmark was sent off for deliberate handball after 35 minutes with Jose Angel Pozo then doubling City's lead just before half time to finish off a good opening period for Patrick Vieira's side, per the Manchester Evening News's Stuart Brennan:

Angelino—who had a hand in the opening two goals—then scored himself on the hour mark before substitute Bersant Celina made it 4-0 just five minutes later.

Bayern were able to find a consolation through Philipp Walter in stoppage time but the Sky Blues sent out an emphatic message in their opening encounter.

City and Bayern's group opponents also clashed on Wednesday, with hosts Roma overcoming CSKA Moscow 3-1, despite the Russian side taking a seventh-minute lead through Timur Zhamaletdinov.

The Italian outfit equalised half an hour later through Arturo Calabresi's headed goal and then took the lead when Daniele Verde's free-kick was deflected in just before half-time.

It was a deserved lead for Roma and they made sure of the points ten minutes into the second half when Matteo Adamo scored and finished the day with three points, to the club's great delight:

Order was also established in Group H during the day's early matches. Porto posted an impressive 24 attempts at goal, 11 on target and 14 corners during their 2-0 victory over BATE Borisov, per UEFA. The Portuguese side overcame a real battle—which saw 24 fouls and five yellows dished out—including two penalties for the goals.

Ruben Macedo netted the opener on 36 minutes, but wasn't selected for the second opportunity when it arose with 14 minutes left on the clock. Ruiz replicated his team-mate's earlier success to set the pace in an intriguing group.

Shakhtar Donetsk weren't to be outdone, however, and join Porto at the top of Group H after also posting a 2-0 scoreline against Athletic. Another feisty match unfolded, with 27 fouls committed across the 90. Oleksandr Zubkov put the Ukrainians ahead on 25 minutes, noted by Shakhtar's English language Twitter account:

Vasyl Shtander made sure of the points with half an hour left, providing Athletic's Basque players with plenty of work to do in a group that is defined by grittiness after the opening round.

Ajax will host Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday to finish off a highly entertaining first round of matches in the group stages of the 2014 UEFA Youth League.

Updates from Tuesday, Sept. 16

Liverpool are making their highly anticipated return to the biggest stage of European football, and the youth squad set the perfect example during the afternoon, convincingly beating Ludogorets 4-0.

The club's Twitter feed shared the final score:

Jerome Sinclair scored the opening goal from close range in the 30th minute, and Daniel Cleary doubled the margin eight minutes later with a fine header.

The visitors were reeling, and a quick counter was converted by Alex O'Hanlon to give the Reds a three-goal lead heading into half-time. The second half was a drab affair as the hosts were happy to defend the lead, and Sinclair scored his second late in the match to seal the final score.

Juventus' Primavera had little difficulty with debutants Malmo, and the final score of 2-0 could have been far worse for the Swedish visitors, via the club's Twitter account:

Alhassane Soumah and Paul Akpan Udoh scored for the hosts.

AS Monaco's senior squad is expected to struggle in the Champions League following the departures of James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao, but the youngsters were able to start their campaign on the right foot, beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 in a thriller.

The hosts took a 2-0 lead into half-time, thanks to goals from Jonathan Martinez and Mohamed Chaibi, but their German opponents quickly reduced the deficit early in the second half through Marc Brasnic.

Play now firmly remained in the French half, but Bayer failed to find a way to score the equaliser, and a late counter from the hosts sealed the three points, Chaibi bagging a brace.

Galatasaray easily handled Belgian champions Anderlecht, recording a routine 3-0 win, as shared by the team's Twitter feed:

Gokcan Gelmen scored for the hosts, and Anderlecht gave the Turks a helping hand by scoring two own goals, through Nathan De Medina and Wout Faes.

Benfica Lisbon and Zenit St. Petersburg failed to score in their afternoon fixture.

In the evening fixtures, Real Madrid recorded a 2-0 win over FC Basel, the goals coming from Borja Mayoral and Jack Harper. Atletico Madrid battled to a 2-1 win over Olympiacos, thanks to goals from Fede Prieto and Roberto Nunez. Nikos Vergos scored for the hosts.

Barcelona scored three goals in the first half to easily take care of APOEL Nicosia, winning 3-0. Juanma Garcia, Mohamed El Ouriachi and Isaac Padilla all found the back of the net early, as the defending champions were content to keep possession and wait for the final whistle in the second half.

You can see the Barca highlights below:

Wednesday's action will include top fixtures between Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal, as well as Schalke 04 and Chelsea. The match of the day is the tie between Bayern Munich and Manchester City, however, while Ajax will host Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday.
