Bears vs. 49ers: Live Score and Analysis for San Francisco

Peter PanacySep 14, 2014

The last time the San Francisco 49ers hosted the Chicago Bears in 2012, newly minted starter Colin Kaepernick helped thrash the visiting Bears by a score of 32-7.

Two seasons later, Chicago paid another visit to the Bay Area, helping San Francisco debut the brand-new Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Sunday Night Football.

Chicago hoped to spoil the party and it did.

The 49ers defense contended with the likes of quarterback Jay Cutler, running back Matt Forte and wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery.

An early Aaron Lynch-blocked punt set up a short field for the 49ers, and Michael Crabtree broke in the first regular-season scoring with a three-yard touchdown reception from Colin Kaepernick. Phil Dawson tacked on a 27-yard field goal late in the first quarter.

Gore was also able to get on the board with an eight-yard rushing touchdown late in the first half. Brandon Marshall answered back for the Bears with an impressive touchdown catch with seconds remaining before halftime.

The 49ers opened up the second half with a long drive, spanning 9:04 and ending with another field goal. But Marshall helped the Bears get within one possession with his second touchdown of the game, early in the fourth quarter. He has now added a third.

Following two Kaepernick turnovers, Chicago separated themselves late in the fourth.

Points off turnovers have hurt the 49ers in a major way and they could never recover. It was a tale of two halves, and San Francisco's second-half struggles spelled disaster as the Bears rallied from a 17-point deficit to upset the 49ers in their home opener.
