Nate LoopSep 13, 2014

Floyd Mayweather (47-0-0) cruised to a convincing victory by unanimous decision in his highly anticipated rematch with Marcos Maidana (35-5-0).

Maidana had no chance against Mayweather in the second bout, with the undefeated champion counterpunching his way to a 47th professional victory in 47 tries.ย

MMA journalist David Kano gave a look at the official judges' scorecard after the fight:

Showtime Stats provided constant updates throughout the bout. Numbers don't tell the whole story of any boxing match, but in this case they are plenty strong enough to prove that Mayweather was in control of the fight from the opening bell.

Here are the stats after one round, courtesy of Showtime Stats:

Maidana opted to pace himself in this fight, a strategy that ended up with him failing to connect on the vast majority of his power punches, per Showtime:

The Argentinian fighter wasn't just suffering from a power outage. His jab, which he used sparingly but effectively in the first bout, wasn't doing much more than generating a stiff breeze for Mayweather to enjoy after three hard-fought rounds, per Showtime Stats:

It was clear that after four rounds, the measured, paced approach wasn't doing Maidana any good:

He did get in a few nice shots in the fourth round, but it ended up as one of the few that fans and observers could argue was in his favor.

There just wasn't much that Maidana could do against Mayweather's defensive acumen.ย Sportsย Illustrated's Chris Mannix noted Money easily took care of things in the fifth round:

If there was one area that Maidana was able to keep up with Mayweather, it was in the total number of body punches landed. Showtime Stats had them nearly dead even at the halfway point, although the total punch numbers and accuracy should alert fans that Maidana was working much harder to get in any meaningful blows:

Just like in the first fight, Maidana threw more punches than his esteemed opposition. However, it wasn't enough to land a greater number of total hits after seven rounds:

There were few opportunities for Maidana to get back into the fight. As the match wore on, it was clear that he would need a desperate knockout blow to leave the MGM Grand with a famous victory. This wasn't to be the case, as Showtime Stats showed that Mayweather quite handily controlled the ninth round:

Mayweather continued to land stinging counter rights to Maidana's skull. He connected on a healthy amount of his power punches after 11 rounds of action:

In the end, Mayweather was once again crowned king. He dominated but didn't give himself too much credit, as SportsCenter noted:

He retained his titles and will now focus on his overall legacy. This likely involves chasing Rocky Marciano, who finished his career at 49-0 and perhaps going for a nice round number of 50 career victories.

As Mayweather ages, he will have to take greater care of his body and perhaps even ramp up his legendary workout routines in order to maintain his sharpness and agility, two of his strongest assets.
