Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana: Pre-Rematch 'All Access' Highlights

Brian MaziqueSep 13, 2014

The All Access series built to hype Saturday's championship rematch between pound-for-pound king Floyd "Money" Mayweather and Marcos Rene Maidana has supplied several side stories to the already compelling matchup.

Perhaps the biggest has been the appearance of Maidana's former strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza.

Ariza was seen with Mayweather's camp in both Episode 2 and 3 of the three-part miniseries. The capacity in which Ariza is involved with Money was never really made clear.

Mayweather said Ariza simply "showed him some stretches," per Ryan Maquinana of Boxing Scene.

Ariza said this during Episode 3: “I’m not working for them anymore. Might as well take advantage of the chance to watch the champ train.” Ariza's appearance may have just been gamesmanship by Mayweather, but one would wonder why a champion who is sitting on top of the world would think he needed to play mind games with the challenger.

Chances are, this will be much ado about nothing, but if Ariza is somehow in Mayweather's corner for the fight on Saturday night, it will become one of the biggest stories of the bout.

In earlier episodes, Mayweather's deteriorated relationship with former friend 50 Cent was profiled. At one time, the two men seemed like close confidants, but recently, they have traded ill-natured barbs.

50 Cent exploited the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge by pledging to donate $750,000 if Mayweather could read one page of a Harry Potter novel. A radio show entitled The Breakfast Club on Power 105 leaked a recording of Mayweather seemingly struggling to read a drop for the show.

Mayweather responded with a tweet showing off two fight checks totaling well over $70 million. The caption said: "Read this."

While this malarkey was taking place, the expected shows of flash and glamour from the Mayweather camp were prevalent. In contrast, Maidana's camp and cause were being made to seem common and simple, when in fact, that was far from the truth.

The challenger will make a healthy $3 million for his work on Saturday, per Anson Wainwright of Boxing Scene—win or lose. That pales in comparison to Mayweather's $32 million purse, but it certainly is enough to fund a respectable training camp and to have some lunch money left over.

Drama is a major part of the fight game. While there were a few peaks in the hype, all in all, it was a pretty mild buildup. That could mean we're in for a whale of a fight. Most fans would take that trade-off.
