Percy Harvin's Versatility Will Make WR Fantasy Football Superstar in 2014

Mike ChiariSep 5, 2014

The Seattle Seahawks displayed a willingness to get the ball in wide receiver Percy Harvin's hands at all costs during their season-opening win against the Green Bay Packers Thursday. That type of creativity is precisely what will make Harvin a fantasy force in 2014.

Harvin's talent has been undeniable since he entered the league with the Minnesota Vikings in 2009. He is one of the fastest and most dynamic players to ever play in the NFL, and he has made plenty of game-breaking plays over the years.

Unfortunately, Harvin has struggled to remain healthy and on the football field. He has just one full, 16-game season to his credit, and he missed all but one regular-season game with the Seahawks last year.

Now that Harvin appears close to 100 percent, though, the sky is the limit for both his statistical production and the success of the defending Super Bowl champions as well.

Harvin touched the ball 11 times offensively against the Packers and picked up 100 total yards. He also added another 60 yards on three kick returns, which is a part of his game that could potentially add a touchdown or two to his stat column over the course of the season.

After the game, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was understandably giddy about his star receiver's form, according to SportsCenter:

Not only does Harvin's skill set make him a big-time fantasy threat in his own right, but his mere presence makes his teammates better as well by drawing the defense's attention, per ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert:

Even if defenses do key on Harvin moving forward, however, it will be essentially impossible to shut him down. His speed and elusiveness allow him to get open in a myriad of different ways, and the Seahawks have no problem handing him the ball on jet sweeps if they can't find him in the passing game.

Harvin simply seemed to be operating in a different gear than everyone else against the Packers, which is something that ESPN's Colin Cowherd picked up on:

It was difficult not to marvel at Harvin after seeing what he did on Thursday night. Even Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas couldn't help but comment on Harvin's impact:

While it is tough to imagine Harvin getting even better as the season continues, he may very well just be scratching the surface. Harvin controlled the game without even scoring a touchdown, and he did most of his damage within a few yards of the line of scrimmage.

The possibilities are endless in terms of getting Harvin involved. Rather than being strictly a wide receiver, Harvin is the definition of an offensive weapon. According to ESPN.com's Terry Blount, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has big plans for the former Florida Gator in 2014.

"He's just such an explosive athlete," Carroll said. "We had a ton of different ways to show how we're fitting him into our offense. It's what we've been hoping for. There's a bunch of other stuff that we'll do. We're just getting started."

Seattle doesn't have a high-volume passing offense, but Harvin is the type of player who makes the most out of his touches. Even if the Seahawks aren't looking to make plays down the field, Harvin is always going to be the recipient of screens and short crossing patterns.

Those are high-percentage plays that will help Harvin in point-per-reception leagues, but he is also perfectly capable of turning any touch into a huge play or touchdown.

Harvin was drafted as a low-end WR2 or flex play in most fantasy leagues prior to the season, but he has all the makings of a top-10 fantasy receiver provided he can stay healthy.

There didn't appear to be anything hampering Harvin on Thursday, and he didn't have any complications after getting hit. Even if Harvin does miss a couple games due to wear and tear, he is still a force to be reckoned with.

No player in the NFL can do as many things as Harvin on a football field, and that makes him a veritable gold mine in fantasy leagues.
