Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie wide receiver Mike Evans exited the team's Week 4 contest against Pittsburgh after suffering a groin injury.
NFL.com's Around the League confirmed Evans' injury:
Ira Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune provided an update after the game:
Evans also spoke about the injury with Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times.
"Just a little tweak—it hurt, and I couldn't run," said Evans, who added he didn't know the severity of the injury. "I should have grabbed him [Cortez Allen] so he couldn't get the pick. That's what I was most angry about."
Evans caught a touchdown in the first quarter of the game, and he ended his day with four receptions for 65 yards.
Matt Miller of Bleacher Report weighed in on Evans prior to his injury:
Big things are expected of Evans in the NFL after a stellar two-year career with Texas A&M, which resulted in him being selected seventh overall in the 2014 draft. In 2013 with the Aggies, Evans accumulated 69 receptions for 1,394 yards—good enough to rank seventh in the nation—and 12 touchdowns.
New head coach Lovie Smith brought the 6'5", 231-pound Evans aboard to complement the similar-sized Vincent Jackson, forming a duo of wide receivers that would give defensive backs nightmares.
After some success early in training camp, it didn't take the rookie long to earn a starting role with the team. He quickly showed his potential at the next level, showcasing his speed by burning Buffalo Bills cornerback Ron Brooks for a preseason touchdown. Here's a look at the play, via Bleacher Report:
He's continued to make strides since then. But unfortunately for Tampa Bay, the team will have to wait for an undetermined amount of time to see more of the same from the promising rookie.
While the Buccaneers wait for Evans' diagnosis, expect the offense to rely heavily on Jackson while giving Robert Herron and Louis Murphy some more reps as well.
Tampa Bay resides in the very difficult NFC South division and hasn't made an appearance in the postseason since 2007. The Bucs finally notched their first win of the season Sunday, but if they are to end their playoff drought in the near future, getting Evans back quickly is a must.
