Mayweather vs. Maidana 2 Fight: Money Lines and Odds for Undercard and Rematch

Rob GoldbergSep 13, 2014

Boxing fans are in for a show with a long night of competitive matches leading up to the main event between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Rene Maidana.

Maidana turned heads in his first matchup against Mayweather in May, going after the champion with some aggressive boxing. While Money was able to escape with a victory by majority decision, the event was exciting enough that fans called for a rematch.

Before these two battle, though, four other matches will keep fans entertained. While each of them have different storylines and styles, they are all worth watching. Here is a guide to help you enjoy each contest throughout the night.

Leo Santa Cruz (-10,000) vs. Manuel Roman (+1,600)

Over the past few years, Leo Santa Cruz has proved that he is one of the top fighters in his class. He has built up a 27-0-1 career record with 15 knockouts to earn the WBC Super Bantamweight title.

The problem is he still has few marquee wins on his resume, and Manuel Roman would not qualify either. As Roman points out, the pressure is squarely on Santa Cruz to perform well in this match:

If Santa Cruz loses or even struggles in this battle, it is hard to see him as one of the better boxers in the world. He certainly would be considered a step down from Guillermo Rigondeaux in the weight class.

It will take a dominant performance from the Mexican star to gain respect from the boxing community.

Miguel Vazquez (-340) vs. Mickey Bey (+260)

No matter what anyone thinks about him, Miguel Vazquez is clearly one of the best in the world at his weight class after consistently defending his IBF Lightweight title. He uses great technique in the ring and knows how to keep opponents from causing much damage.

While this style sometimes puts fans to sleep, he does not care as long as his hand is raised at the end of the match.

Mickey Bey has earned some quality wins in his career, but he will struggle to land punches on his opponent in this contest. Although this one will go to the judges, Vazquez should be able to come through with another win.

Alfredo Angulo (-420) vs. James De La Rosa (+300)

After rising up to become one of the top boxers in his weight class, Alfredo Angulo has gone through a bit of a rough patch. He has been knocked out in three of his last five fights, most recently against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in March.

He is hoping this match against James De La Rosa will give him a chance at redemption, per Dan Rafael of ESPN.com:

"

I've been anxious to get back in the ring ever since the end of the Canelo fight. I'm ready to get back on the winning track and this is a great opportunity for me to do that in front of the world on Mexican Independence Day weekend. This fight could not be more critical for my future in this sport and I want to put on a great show for the fans.

"

While De La Rosa once appeared to be a promising young fighter, he has struggled lately as well. Since starting 20-0, he has only managed to go 2-2 over the last four years. Additionally, he is slated to compete in a second match in just over a month after giving himself over a year between each of his last four fights.

Angulo's road to redemption should start with this matchup.

John Molina (-210) vs. Humberto Soto (+160)

This might be the closest match on the card as the two veteran boxers know how to win at this level. They will both be aggressive, giving everything they can to try to earn a knockout.

The competition could be decided by one mistake from either side, especially if one of them fails to get their hands up in time to prevent a big hit.

Between the two, Humberto Soto has fared much better lately with six wins in a row. John Molina has the talent to come through with a win, but he will have to get out to a strong start. This will help him gain enough confidence to pull out a victory.

Floyd Mayweather (-800) vs. Marcos Rene Maidana (+500)

No matter what you think about the undercard, the reason to tune in is for this rematch between Mayweather and Maidana.

Throughout his career, Mayweather has showcased a great defensive ability to avoid getting into much danger. This helped him build up an incredible 46-0 record over almost 20 years as a professional.

However, Maidana flipped the script by going after the champion, throwing and landing more punches on Mayweather than anyone else in history, according to Compubox (via BoxRec.com). Although he slowed down late, his ability to put the undefeated fighter against the ropes helped bring about this rematch.

Still, Steve Kim of Max Boxing believed at the time that a rematch would favor Mayweather:

Money is a smart enough boxer to use his experience in his favor. He will be able to avoid the big hits from Maidana and come back with solid counters.

There is a reason he has been undefeated to this point, and he should be able to survive another tough test.
