Kuechly Vital to Panthers' Hopes of Super Bowl Run
The Panthers have responded well without their defensive leader, jumping out to a 4-0 start to the season. Despite the team's success without him, Kuechly, 24, has established himself as the best middle linebacker in the game. In his first three seasons, he accumulated 509 total tackles, seven sacks, four fumble recoveries, seven interceptions and 29 passes defended.
He's also collected his fair share of hardware in his short career, being named the 2012 Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year and the 2013 AP Defensive Player of the Year, along with being a first-team All-NFL selection by the Associated Press and a Pro Bowler the past two years.
It's hardly surprising the Panthers made him the highest-paid linebacker in the game in September, signing him to a five-year, $62 million contract extension, per ESPN.com. That extension elicited this response from teammate Greg Olsen: "Congrats to my buddy Luke Kuechly on his new deal! NOBODY deserves it more than him. Better dude than player!"
"The one thing he's done, in all honesty, that has surprised, me is his complete command of what we do," head coach Ron Rivera said of Kuechly at the time of his extension, per ESPN.com's report. "When you find a guy like that, that's pretty special, and you want to keep him around."
While the Panthers have surpassed early expectations, long-term success will be a tall task for them without their leader on defense. Indeed, Kuechly's leadership, athleticism, intensity and instincts have made him one of the most valuable defensive players in the league. He's the quarterback of Carolina's defense.
