Sting Makes His WWE Programming Debut During 2014 Survivor Series

It took nearly 30 years to come to fruition, but Sting finally made wrestling history Sunday night by officially appearing on WWE programming for the first time at Survivor Series.

He arrived in the middle of Team Cena vs. Team Authority and confronted Triple H. WWE provided the evidence:

WrestlingINC.com broke down how Sting impacted the result:

WWE broadcaster Kyle Edwards talked about how big of a moment it was:

The Miz made a joke about the crowd chant:

Sting is undoubtedly one of the biggest stars in wrestling history; however, there has always been one glaring omission on his resume. Even though The Icon did it all in WCW and TNA, WWE has been the measuring stick ever since the mid-1980s.

The Stinger has seemingly had several opportunities to make the jump to WWE over the years, but he always decided against it. Now that he is 55 years of age, though, this was likely his last chance to make an impact on the world's biggest wrestling company.

There was plenty of speculation regarding Sting's potential WWE status once his TNA contract came to an end. That was further fueled by a cryptic tweet courtesy of Sting back in July:

Many wondered what the significance of that date was. As fans would find out on July 14, it marked Sting's first true involvement in WWE as he was revealed to be a playable preorder character in WWE 2K15 via a chill-inducing promo.

With Sting seemingly in some type of working relationship with WWE, most figured it was only a matter of time before he became part of the product. WWE chairman Vince McMahon got in on the act by teasing Sting's eventual signing on Twitter:

Even WWE Hall of Famer and legendary announcer Jim Ross was unsure if the moment of Sting appearing live on WWE programming would ever come to fruition:

Before Sting's signing was made public, he made it known that appearing on WWE programming and having one final match were priorities of his. For all his accomplishments, it can be argued that Sting's legacy won't be cemented until he has at least one big moment in WWE.

Sting's idea of a big moment is quite similar to that of most fans. During an interview with Rob Leigh of the Daily Mirror following the airing of the WWE 2K15 promo, Sting revealed his desired opponent for a potential WWE match.

"

I've made it clear I'd love to have one last hurrah, one last big match hopefully. And of course I've been outspoken about Undertaker being the opponent. I know what happened at WrestleMania (XXX) where Brock Lesnar broke his streak. I think, or at least I'm hoping, that Taker's still going to come back and that he's not done. If he's not done, and he would consider doing it, I'd love to work with him one time. I'd love to wrestle him one time before I call it quits.

"

Sting even suggested a potential venue in the form of WrestleMania XXXI at Levi's Stadium.

"How about San Francisco, 2015, in April," Sting said.

The Undertaker vs. Sting is widely considered to be one of the top dream matches that has never occurred. WWE has been in the business of making dreams a reality in recent years with The Rock vs. John Cena as the most obvious example.

As huge as those encounters were, The Undertaker vs. Sting would be at an entirely different level. They possess two of the best gimmicks in the history of professional wrestling, and it almost feels as though they were meant to go up against each other at some point.

The fact that Sting wants to make it happen is a huge deal, but The Undertaker has to reciprocate the interest. Many assumed that The Phenom was done when Lesnar broke his streak at WrestleMania, but the allure of a match against Sting on the big stage might be enough to bring Taker back if he was considering retirement.

Both Sting and The Undertaker have given fans essentially all they could ask for over the years, but a match between them is the lone exception. Now that Sting is officially part of WWE, it is more possible now than it ever has been.

Sting has already left a lasting legacy on professional wrestling, but a match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania would quite simply take it to unseen heights.
